Not a lot of saving graces for "British Cool" but we do have some of the best designed power sockets in the world.

and its not just the outside design: internally the live wire is the shortest straightest wire with the least amount of slack, while the neutral then the earth wires have increasing amount of slack and bend to them. So if something pulls down hard on the wireing to making it break, the live wire should break first, blowing the fuse and immediately cutting off power to the whole circuit.

our curse for having good electric plugs was that our tvs were set for 25/50 not 30/60 fps. So our sonic the hedgehog's catchphrase was "gotta go quicker!"

@siege How does it compares to EU which while far from UK level of safety is still much better than US?

@siege At the same time, if I’m not mistaken, it’s entirely legal to have a 1942 electrical installation with aluminum cables and no RCD :)

@siege UK have one of the ugliest and awkward plugs in the world. The whole spacing doesn't make any sense and looks like designed for 2yo+ kids.USA and some European plugs like Type-L or Type-I with three-pronged plugs does exactly the same with better space usage. Also, they resolve their original flaws of getting stuck and breaking, bit common on two-pronged plugs.

@siege This is the most recktarded' statistic used to support UK plugs.Sorry to sound rude on this, but fire statistics does not mean anything related to the plug.Bad electrical circuit, wood usage on buildings, chimneys, poor/lazy cooking skills, poor fire detectors,. Name it. There are hundred or thousand better reasons why a house can get on fire than "electrical plug"

I think that the German Schuko plugs are fine as well, they only are lacking the fuse. An example of a really bad plug is the type that is used in Canada and the US since the contacts are live even when the plug is pulled halfway out.

@siege That is a staged demonstration. In reality they are often "pins up".I agree the UK system is better than USA. But the EU one is better.

@heluecht @siege The one reservation I have about CEE 7/3 sockets aka SchuKo aka Type F is that they are not polarized. In theory CEE 7/5 aka Type E aka "Eastern European"/French could address this, but there is no standardized assignment of Live and Neutral. In the past this didn't matter much, but with the prevalence of switch mode power supplies and weak reference through Y-capacitors, this does matter!Ever got a tingle when touching your computer and a powered accessory? Reverse the Plug!

@siege I just did my own little test;4 different cables, dropped on floor 5 times; All cables landed with pins down, at least once. 2 cables landed with pins up 3 times, 1 cable landed with pins up once, and 1 cable landed every time pins down.Perhaps there is a tendency with pins down. But compared to the standard European cable; Type "straight" and most common; Unable to land with pins up.Type "angled"; (don't have any) but I think they tend to land on there side, depending on cable shape

@siege Not important in and of itself.... But I am irritated that many people claim "UK plug is best", without extensive experience with all types of plugs. I can't for instance speak of the Aussie one, but between UK, Europe and USA; USA clearly loses, and UK vs Europe is probably more a personal preference.

@niclas naw, for safety. No other plug has as good internal wiring safety, a fuse, a power button at the plugsocket and required grounding for the circuit to become live.

@WillTootMaybe Would be really weird if it wasn’t, as of 2023. At the same time, the number of newly built houses, and thus new electrical installations, is a tiny fraction - majority is secondary market, that is old houses continuously “refurbished”, really meaning new layer of wallpaper and new carpet, with whatever electrical installation was there at the moment of construction.@siege
