       @emilymbender is the most brilliant and generous teacher we have on what LLMs can, should, cannot, and should not be expected to do. I am so grateful that she uses social media to teach.        @guidostevensIt's not quite the same, because the Chinese room demonstrates it's possible to simulate conversation without understanding.The Thai library demonstrates the impossibility of bootstrapping understanding from alien text alone (and to the computer all text is alien).The man in the Chinese room has a better chance of learning written Chinese because he has culture. @jeffjarvis @emilymbender @ct_bergstrom
