@kdawson I think it's close to impossible to not have had it by now.

@mansr @kdawson I've never had it (at least as far as I know, and I've tested fairly consistently), but then again I also haven't put away my masks or refused to get vaccinated or (willingly) been to a large/crowded gathering since 2019.

@rosenstand @mansr @kdawson Same. It’s really not impossible since I, my spouse, and my parents haven’t had it, and several people on my work team haven’t had it either. Though I suppose there are places where everyone has.TBF I only stopped masking this month after getting my 6th vaccine shot and will be masking again if we get the usual uptick in July.

@katebranden @rosenstand @kdawson Are you taking weekly PCR tests? If not, you can't possibly be sure that you haven't had a mild case.

@mansr @rosenstand @kdawson I don’t need PCR tests when I don’t leave my house or interact with other humans. I have a heavily compromised immune system so if I got it, it wouldn’t be a mild case.

@mansr @kdawson Unless I got it in the first months of the pandemic hitting the US (Had an illness that felt pretty bad and took a month to get over, then no. I've got people I can't afford to pass it on to, so I'm what would count in the US as overly cautious, or in Japan as reasonably polite.

@mansr @kdawson Difficult, but not impossible. We still mask, we travel with a hepa filter for hotel rooms, and we avoid crowds. We also don't socialize unless we all have a negative test first. Isolating, but we both need our brains for our livelihoods, and we don't have kids, so no schools. So far we have avoided it.But I just took @mrsquee in for a Colonoscopy and the hospital no longer requires masking in common areas. It's so frustrating.

@mansr @kdawson 5 vaccinations, and I still mask when in public around other people. Haven't been sick of anything since pre-COVID, when we just assumed that we would always get colds 2-3x/year.

@kdawson Everybody gets Covid. Whether one knows about it or not has to do with how symptomatic you get and if the test you take is valid.Standard home-tests till show a negative result 20% of the time even if you have Covid. (Why "Everybody gets Covid?" - well, avoiding it is like avoiding getting a simple cold. You pretty much have to avoid ever visiting society ... )/March 2020 and Jan 2022

@mansr @kdawson We both appear to have escaped it. Utmost precautions always, tho, since spouse is severely immunosuppressed. We became #UrbanHermits before lockdowns, unfashionably early. Had been following China’s news 1st, then Korea’s. Sizable immigrant populations of both here. 1st case here was Chinese American woman; couple had gone to China for holiday; husband made biz trips after her hospitalization, until he too fell ill; both died, sadly.

@mansrIt's actually quite possible, if you have an immunocompromised loved one, or are one yourself. You just have to make a commitment to masking, distancing and avoiding peopled places. It's not a guarantee, sure, nothing is, but it's possible. It just requires more sacrifice than abled people are bothered to make.@kdawson

@mansr @kdawson It isnt, but its very hard if you live a normal life.until 2022 I lived 7 miles from a village and post was dropped half a mile away. Here is also a remote area but a tiny hamlet both my neighbours have had it and one is retired so doesn't often go out but so far I havent,I rarely go anywhere public ,always mask up in stores and I dont have visitors inside. But I am extra careful as I in an high risk group but not fully vaccinated( I had a v severe reaction to the first jab

@troed @kdawson Not true. There’s a test. The University of Washington can tell if your antibodies are from infection or vaccine. I had that in early February. I was negative. It’s possible I’ve had an asymptomatic since then but not probable. I mask and distance.

@mansr @rosenstand @kdawson Yeah, it’s so pervasive that it’s likely those who think they haven’t had it yet likely did have it but were asymptomatic. People have to have been extremely isolated to have not been exposed by this point.

@El_Jefe The tests are good. If you got a positive, especially on PCR, you can be pretty sure the answer is yes. Proving the negative is harder. If I had been able to vote in my own survey (apparently Masto doesn't let me), I would have given a solid No. I isolated for the first part of the pandemic, and was careful (masking etc.) whenever in public thereafter. Still am careful. Vaxed & boosted 6x. I have had no sickness since before 2020 — no symptoms of any kind. It seems to me a stretch that I could have picked up even an asymptomatic case and had zero repercussions for weeks or months thereafter. So, No.

@kdawson I see.“Mullis passed away last year at the age of 74, but there is no doubt that the biochemist regarded the PCR as inappropriate to detect a viral infection.”https://bpa-pathology.com/covid19-pcr-tests-are-scientifically-meaningless/

@El_Jefe "but there is no doubt that the biochemist regarded the PCR as inappropriate to detect a viral infection" — right, the PCR tech is almost too sensitive. It can still show positive weeks after an active infection, long past the time of infectiousness. Helps if you can get the quantitative measure, called Ct, via "qPCR." A Ct value above, say, 33 almost certainly points to a non-infectious condition, whereas someone who sees a value of 25 or below is almost certainly transmitting. Rapid antigen tests are more definitive in a way — a positive means the person is infectious, but a negative is not conclusive on its own. Too easy to get a false net, and it's much worse with Omicron.
