Mabel is okay. (I was afraid she'd cut herself on glass, but no, no blood and she seems fine.) Previous homeowners (also dog owners) had screwed plexiglass on the inside of two interior doors, making a theoretical dog zone in the kitchen and back hall. We sometimes use it when we go out for a while. The plexiglass was broken, and I didn't see any glass so maybe that pane was empty or had been replaced?

My guess is Dipper got out first and then Mabel--who has more Lab-like bulk--tried the same trick. Or maybe she went first and he managed to get the other for open. That's happened before, and the kiddo doesn't remember what was open before our arrival.

Understandably, the kid's attention was on a distressed, bouncy Dipper and poor trapped Mabel, a puddle of pee at her feet.Since there were two of us, the kiddo was able to put not-as-helpful-as-he-thinks Dipper outside. Then I eased Mabel backward through the door, with the kiddo on that side for added reassurance. Then all four of us ran around in the yard for a bit, enjoying our freedom.
