when people were imagining the future's urban californian dystopia they imagined a cool setting like blade runner. the reality is cracked pavement, trash, and homeless ppl shitting everywhere. downtown san francisco rn:

The Blade Runner setting just focused on the cool, gritty, and sexy cyberpunk elements and not so much on the cracked pavement, trash, and homeless people shitting everywhere. Cyberpunk fans forget that cyberpunk settings by definition are not places that are healthy for most of its inhabitants to be, nor is it a place they enjoy living in.

@Hoss the fictional version focused on the cool parts but the irl version simply has no cool parts

       >tfw you're a cyberpunk fan and realize in all likelihood you wouldn't be living like the protagonist of the story but like one of the billions of people that is living a life significantly worse than that of a medieval peasant from which there is no escape.

@Hoss neil blomkampf's films kind of suck but in both district 9 and elysium he was onto something with 'favela future and a sprinkling of high technology'

District 9 was a very middling movie, but I didn't hate it. I think you're right about the cyber-favela concept though. There's some serious kino potential in there that no filmmaker has been competent enough to truly tap into.

@Hoss @didymus Yeah if you read the book it's based on 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' the earth is a nearly abandoned nuclear wasteland where finding a living creature, even a simple spider, is a rarity.

@Hoss i agree this is very fertile and underexploited ground. some guy on fedi recently was riffing off the dome and coming up with fire ideas for a satirical anti-zog/woke dystopia. i think it hasnt happened because most people who are interested are heckin' sciencerino redditors
