I am helping to set up an online conference modeled on #ActivityConf 2020, with talks by both fediverse software and protocol developers, and fedizens who have ideas about improving UX, moderation, funding of fediverse work and other ideas on the social side. @alex That's not up to me. I presume there will be a coordination team who will make decisions by consensus about who is and isn't welcome, with reference to a CoC. At this point I'm just floating the general idea, to get a sense of whether enough people even want to have a conference to make the effort worthwhile.

@Soy_Magnus My proposal is for an online event, most likely using a BigBlueButton server, like the one used for ActivityConf 2020. A coordination team will be set up to decide such things once we establish there's enough interest to make the organising worthwhile.

@strypey Rather than just avoiding conferences and events try to compliment them.Perhaps having a virtual event before or after a larger (relevant) conference would help.That way, a couple of the virtual speakers can repeat the talk in a live event or they can cross promote each other.Im sure theres a subtlety to it, especially with regards to motivations but I can imagine the payoff is bigger if done properly.

@strypey I'm excited you're organizing an AP conf! I'm part of the DecentSocial care team / organizers, and we have a little bit of experience with running an online socialweb conference (we had a small online un-conference earlier this year, at decentsocial.net). I think the team is still resting / busy with other stuff, but we'd love to chat and compare notes.

Seems there's plenty of interest in a fediverse/ ActivityPub conference later this year. People are volunteering for specific tasks, which is great. But I don't think it's appropriate for a conference like this to have final decisions about things like CoC issues made by abenevolent dictator. And I don't want to be one.
