@StillIRise1963 @Crystal_Fish_Caves Thank you for saying this. So many people seem oddly ignorant about the fact you just stated. I'd imagine having a typical straight white American man live the life of a Black person, or queer person, or Latino person, would be eye-opening indeed.

@StillIRise1963 @Crystal_Fish_Caves I have seen affluent white people have a full-blown meltdown temper tantrum over simply being asked to consider whiteness as a form of privilege. I can't imagine what they'd do in the face of being asked to live as a Black person does in our society.

@casserolefood @StillIRise1963 @Crystal_Fish_Caves Jane Elliott was my awakening on this. I watched one of her videos when I was still stuck in white fragility 20 years ago. She asks a room full of white people that if they think Black people are equal in society, raise their hands. Most do. Then she asks them to stand up if they would be okay with being treated the way Black people are. None of them stand, and she calls them out on it. That moment was my awakening. I am grateful to her.

@Crystal_Fish_Caves @StillIRise1963 Another related thought -- America *loved* Nazism in the era leading up to WW 2. American industrialists like Henry Ford wrote antisemitic screeds -- Ford was honored with a Nazi award for his activism. There were numerous "Hitlervilles" in the USA governed by Nazi ideology.And, of course, the Nazis themselves drew on segregationism in the USA to inform the Nuremberg Laws. The only reason we claimed to have rejected Nazism was because the Nazis attacked.

@brianonbarrington @Crystal_Fish_Caves @StillIRise1963 Earlier today I was reading about how a KKK resurgence in 1946 was powered by segregationist veterans - people who literally fought the Nazis - energised by (a) uppity black veterans who now felt entitled to equality at home, (b) rhetoric about "while you were fighting, they took your jobs" and (c) influxes of Jewish refugees. They were condemned as unAmerican but also had mainstream support.

@outeast @Crystal_Fish_Caves @StillIRise1963 Plenty of American "conservatives" react with great enthusiasm to authoritarian ideas from both Nazism and Soviet communism. There was a funny/scary video of a man reading quotes about politics, government and society to a MAGA crowd to rapturous applause and hoots of approval until he revealed that the quotes were from Goebbels, Lenin and Mussolini.
