       @TaanGerd He did it mainly afford powers to his office that had otherwise not been afforded by the US Constitution, so he could prosecute the war in a dictatorial, and, in his eyes, an expedient manner. Lincoln was terribly wrong to open that Pandora’s Box, but neither was the South justified in waging a nation-wrecking civil war all for the right to keep a nigger in your house.
