Sad to hear that home.social is shutting down. It’s good that they can, but 6000 people have to pick up and move their accounts now, lose their post history, etc. that’s really frustrating. I wish admins of instances like this had a way to declare “I’m done” and let someone else step in to manage it.I won’t claim to understand all the factors driving home.social to this point, but if they are amenable, I am certain other admins would take over.

@jerry I've moved to a new host this week as three posts I put out were boosted 14k times and the cost of disk use and bandwidth flooded the server I was on and exceeded their usage fees.Three posts.

@jerry yep it's the one downside of Mastodon is one of those posts had a massive image I'd posted. That got 8000 shares, 6000 likes 42k log file entries inc notifications and comments The other concerning Twitter, 1500 shares in three days and an Amazon post 3000 shares so that's 16500 unique log files from that alone 6590 likes between them- 30k writes. So between four posts - 72k log files created

@cloudguy @jerry I have never thought about an interaction in terms of 'log file lines generated', that's hilarious 😂.I have a reverse proxy/WAF and router/firewall that sit in front of my Mastodon instance, and every network connection gets logged in each of those places too. 😅I get the need for consumption-based hosting but it almost seems like we are headed back to the "slashdot effect" for Fediverse instances.

@hmhackmaster @jerry It's more than that it's fw, loadbalancers, it's init.d/systemd, it's also everytime it's pulling that file it's also parsing data from the stored location. So that one post say it's 13 words totalling 63 characters. One image 2.9Mb. Generates the works of Shakespeare in log files

@cloudguy @hmhackmaster it’s hard to get my head around - we generate about 100GB of logs per day and 100TB of data transfer per month here. And this is a relatively small instance.

@jerry @hmhackmaster its why Mastodon will fail. And it's been obvious since day 1.Data costs.Disk usage costs. Then there is GDPR there is the right to be forgotten but by law as a service provider you must store data. And back it up.Mastodon as fluffy as it is is a flash in the pan because the model is fucked

@cloudguy @jerry @hmhackmaster No, you're saying very large instances have things to keep in mind. Smaller instances do not.I run a family instance on an unmetered 250Mbit connection. Not sure what disk allowance I've given the Mastodon container but there should be a terabyte or two. You do _not_ as a service provider need to store data (see Mullvad VPN). _If_ you do, however, there are things you might need to have in mind - if open to the public. If friends-and-family, no.I take your absolute "model is fucked" statement and question it, slightly./ex-global Head of SaaS, GDPR-trained

@troed @jerry @hmhackmaster Mullvad VPN is NOT an example that's Swedish law it is not law specific to all global states. One of us is an auditor.

Another reason why instances should not get too large and people should be encouraged to choose smaller instances. I really like @dansup ‘s idea for Pixelfed, setting a default limit of 1000 users per instance./cc @jerry

@cloudguy @jerry @hmhackmaster What in "Global Head of SaaS" did you misunderstand to think I believe laws are the same globally? On the contrary - it's your absolute statement that made no sense. The EUCJ decision on what constitutes an Electronic Communications Service would not include a Mastodon admin, for exampel. Esp. not when not a paid for service. My point was that there are plenty of valid reasons why your claim that the Mastodon architecture cannot work is simply false.

@troed ive read many views about how mastodon/fediverse isn’t sustainable, meanwhile I’ve been here managing Infosec.exchange for going 8 years and expect I’ll still be going in another 8. :blobcatshrug: @cloudguy @hmhackmaster
