I have a figure made with the R package 'maps'.The paper with that figure got accepted by a journal requiring a CCBy4 license. What's the license of figures that we produce by using that R package? The code of the package is released under GPL3, but not clear to me if that applies also to the figures produced by me with that package.#RStat #datascience #license #copyright Ideas? @franco_vazza @tiago

@manlius the licence of the software doesn't apply to things made with that software. That's why you can make CC-licensed documents with Microsoft Word, for example

@christianp @manlius Exactly! The license has bearing only to the software itself, its source code, and derivatives. The output is out of scope of the license, and belongs to the user.

@tiago @christianp thank you! So there is no issue in generating figures containing maps? The journal is asking to specify the license of the shape file used for the maps in the figure. It’s not some easy map to recognize, like OSM or google.. it looks more like the standard boundaries of countries (no meta info such as roads, mountains, etc)

@manlius @christianp That's quite different! If the figure contains a shape file that is copyrighted, then you need a license to include it in your figure. If the R package you used had a free license, then most likely the shape files had a permissive license compatible with the free license. What package are we talking about?

@tiago @christianp and that’s what I was fearing. I contacted the maintainer of the package, let’s see. Many thanks for the exchange!

@manlius @tiago that shape file will have come from somewhere, so should have licensing information attached. If it doesn't, you need to talk to the person you got it from

@manlius @tiago ahh, I've looked at the repo for the maps package (https://github.com/adeckmyn/maps) and there are indeed lots of shape files with no attribution. Tricky!

@manlius @christianp I can't see any licensing information anywhere in that repository, even for the maps. Where did you get it's GPLv3?

@manlius @christianp that's not enough, actually. The repository itself does not contain this information. It should include the full copy of the license text, and a header on every file should mention it too. Very sloppy.
