If you've never fallen down the wiki-hole that is the ***Lun*-class ekranoplan **then do I have a treat in store for you... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lun-class_ekranoplanEspecially if you follow it up with this incredible Livejournal post in which someone sneaks into one in dry dock and posts a ton of photos https://igor113.livejournal.com/51213.html

@simon That thing looks like they parked it at the end of the Soviet Union and abandoned it ever since. Not the only thing that happened to.Video of a visit to the Buran, the soviet space shuttle:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9H0O-gxJ4Y

@simon I am hopeful this one is less vapourware than all the other WIGs/ekranoplans. Electric definitely makes more sense here than it does in aircraft.

@simon I really hope they get to delivering some of those! The regulatory issues must be... interesting, though they do get to class them as maritime vessels as they're technically not aircraft, so that's easier at least!

@simon it's fascinating how little regard Russia has for artifacts like this. For example their one of a kind, unique prototypes Su-47, MiG-1.44, and Buran space shuttle can be found not in a museum, but falling apart in abandoned part of an airport in the middle of nowhere. https://goo.gl/maps/L6KAAWeFynn1bPQC9

@simon FWIW, P-270 were also pretty insane, Soviet ramjet technology was way ahead of their time. If you can trust their specifications, which as recent events show, it's a huge _if_.

@simon Been following them for a while, really intrigued by their revival of ground effect planes and them going beyond eg new battery technology to electrify parts of the airplane industry. True innovation!Similar to the Candela electric boats, which revives hydrofoils to make electric boats feasible: https://candela.com/

@simon Wasn't the big problem with ekranoplans that they're quite sensitive to weather conditions? Unable to traverse "high" waves, meaning less reliable than eg hydrofoil boats?I've taken a hydrofoil shuttle Helsinki-Tallinn. Nice on a good day, not so nice with higher wind. They stopped the route because of unreliable service, to my understanding.

@simon Found this in the discussion:"We take off at the periphery of harbors and fly over the open water in-between. Seagliders have 5ft wave tolerance on takeoff and landing, and 5 ft waves in a harbor is basically a hurricane. Flyover wave tolerance is more like 8-13ft, since any higher than that is likely the result of conditions where commercial aircraft arent flying anyways. We definitely designed the vehicle with wave tolerance in mind."

@simon I think the padded cell is front or rear gunner, the window pattern is the same in both cases
