It's really more of a big antenna phone than a "satellite phone." Fewer towers require phones to have larger antennas.

@Invictus I have used an iridium phone on a boat in the middle of the ocean. Direct to satellite connection.

I give them an A+ for using their imaginations. I once tried to get dish TV when I lived in an apartment. The technician told me the building was in the way of the satellite... The building was in the way of the satellite... The dish won't work unless it's aimed right at that "satellite". 😉

@Invictus @R1250R this direction finding was accurate only to a mile or more. GPS can be accurate to a foot.

@libertyordeath @R1250R probably because there are more cell towers now. What do you think 5G is for? More towers closer together. They won't ever lose track of you now!

@libertyordeath @Invictus @R1250R how come GPS works even when there are no cell towers in range, like in the middle of the pacific, thousands of miles from land?

@libertyordeath @R1250R for the same reason it doesn't work in your house ,or car, or going under a bridge... Sometimes the signal is blocked, other times it isn't. Thers is nothing between you and the tower when you are out at sea, but that doesn't mean it's coming from directly above you. Lighthouses also didn't work until they figured out how to haul bricks in rockets...

@Invictus @R1250R ironic that you believe receivers can pickup a cell tower thousands of miles away but can’t fathom it can pickup a satellite a hundred miles up.

@libertyordeath @R1250R Amazing that you think Dish TV would spend the time and money blasting satellites into orbit and maintaining them just to provide a digital TV signal.

@libertyordeath @R1250R You don't need "cellular service." It's done by radio triangualtion. This is how pilots navigated in WWII.

@libertyordeath @R1250R what do you think "cellular service" is? It's all done with radio towers which have been around for a long time now, certainly before WWII.

@Invictus @R1250R yes, triangulation works, but accuracy is an order of magnitude less, decreases the further you are from the radio towers. What you’re saying is that in 90s in the Himalayas, when the nearest cell tower was in Japan, they used radio towers thousands of miles away to locate themselves within inches?

@libertyordeath @R1250R It's called radio towers ,radio triangulation. You don't need cellular service. Your cell phone doesn't work because you haven't paid the bill. I have old smartphones which can't call anyone but the GPS works. You don't need to call anyone to use the radio triangulation.

@libertyordeath @R1250R and alas, that is why we have 5G, to make radio triangulation more precise. If 3 towers near you are not precise enough, how would a satellite which is further away be MORE precise?

@Invictus @R1250R do you propose that GPS is really just triangulation. Does it use the cell signal or a separate signal transmitted from the cell towers?

@libertyordeath @R1250R Essentially, yes. Many are in on it, and the rest are unassuming. There are whistleblowers. Obviously the gps is not carrying conversation but what difference does it make? Besides this radio triangulation has been used for decades to pinpoint where people made phone calls from, even using it to catch murderers. Have you never heard of this??

@Invictus so does this triangulation use the same transmitters as the cell signals?
