The fine against #Meta is more valuable for the EU data economy than for the data protection rights of EU individuals. The DPC did not rule against the surveillance based business model but against it being conducted by a US-based company. The GDPR has become a tool for economic protectionism.

@malteengeler As far as I understand this issue, it is not only about €&$ but also about a lack of separation of power in the US democracy and its governments potential to obtain private communications of other nations subjects.

There is still no better way to put it than with the words of @dgolumbia: "Privacy advocates are usually more concerned with what the state might do than with what the market is actually doing."(don't get me wrong: Fighting government surveillance is of tremendous importance but if our fight ends there we are left with the same surveillance but conducted by private organizations whose management is - by definition - not subject to any direct democratic control.)

@malteengeler Purely informative: This fine is just around or less than 1% of Meta's 2022 revenue.

@malteengeler You are overlooking the following. #meta is required to: (i) suspend future data transfer to the US within 5 months, (ii) bring processing operations into compliance with Chapter V GDPR, (iia) ceasing unlawful processing operations, (iib) including storage and data transfer to the US within six months.⬇️ https://edpb.europa.eu/our-work-tools/consistency-findings/register-decisions/2023/decision-data-protection-commission_en

@malteengeler Because you didn't point out, that EDPD requirements have the potential to disrupt #meta business model on a technical level. It jeopardizes the functioning of their (open) social graph, as it would essentially require EU user data segregation to meet EDPD requirements. The result would probably be a fragmented social graph.
