       Internet means slow, heavy churn in your social circles as corporate IM services one by one die and are replaced with new corporate IM services and only people you thought to get the new handle for in the window where both old and new coexist survive to the next phase. If IM had been a general protocol like email instead of being captured by corporate "apps", could we have escaped this problem? Maybe this is easier for generations that actually used SMS instead of imprinting on AIM fully in 1999

       @mcc We were almost there, but both Google and Facebook went the extinguish route for their XMPP federation… But for a brief shining period you could friend and trade messages between a glut of jabber-compatible services…
