I wanna say I am sorry for the resistance of the Netherlands against restoring nature.. 🌱 :banhammer: Apparently the few farmers here think nature is bullshit (not from the bull) and we need so many cattle in such a small country. And since they have tractors, politicians give them a standing ovationTo be clear, I do not support them in the slightest but those few 'voices' do have much effect it seems :sad_cat:

I grew up in a small town on a farm-ish with farmers all around so I have a pretty good idea what I'm fighting againstAs a kid I also wanted to become a farmer ofc (cause of the mega machines) and never thought myself a 'desk job'But man.... was I WRONG!Didn't take many years before I discovered I didn't had anything in common with the people around me..And the fcked up thing..They try to make you believe you're the 'weird one' while actually you're the only one with eyes open

@stux if a business model is not feasible anymore it declines. that's life. the state can help those if the situation is politically heavy, but nobody needs meat. especially not from cattle.

@stux Oh… that makes a lot of sense. I was born in Canada, but grew up on my grandparents’ farm. They had immigrated from the Netherlands to Canada when my father was a small child after WW2. They were the same. Zero respect for the natural world around them, and I could never figure that out. They came from generations of Dutch farmers so may have just brought the mind set with them.

@stux as soon as you find a way how those industrial farmers can make more money out of nature than out of farming (and simply shifting all the agricultural subsidies to become nature subsidies would do the trick, see e.g. Switzerland) they'd all immediately become pro nature 'farmers' ...

@stux Same in Ireland. It’s presented as ‘the farmers’ but turns out that it’s always a few huge industrial farmers ‘preserving the old ways’ while also undercutting small farmers with scale.
