In the middle of some twitter kerfuffle, I mentioned my commitment to the Internet Archive, and mentioned how I've had 80-100 hour weeks.One of the bluechoads threw the now-threadbare comeback of "100 HOURS, REALLY" followed by three cry-laughing emoji.Besides the comeback of "this guy paid $8 to get to the top of the reply pile", there's also the honest question of what I mean by 100 hours of work in a single week. Let me explain. This is not advice.

I woke up this morning and the first thing I did was grab my phone and add several people to the slack. I checked e-mail, and used voice recognition to get back to a few people. I then got cleaned up and checked my home computer for a few scripts to see how they were running, and double-checked the meeting we're doing today on Provenance/origin, which has a spreadsheet.

On the way to work, I listened to some IA materials that interested me, to see what sort of things they are.I'm here, now, checking mastodon, bluesky, e-mail, and multiple machines, as well as setting up for a few digitizing materials like audio cassettes and VHS tapes. They're going now, as I set off some uploads.

Somewhere in there, I might open up a few "sorting boxes" I keep going, keystroke-based web interfaces to curation and moderation I put my hand in, as well as possibly working on a few blog entries, either for IA or for my own site pointing to IA materials.The sorting boxes, I'll do until I fall asleep. They're designed to be easy to have in a side window or my tablet computer while I watch TV or hang out at home.

I will do this until 2-3 in the morning, and go to sleep and do it all again.Is this healthy? Hell no. Do I think anyone not doing it this way is a slacker or not hustling gold? Again, hell no.The scripts I do are meant to be easy for me to work with and a constant background thing while I talk to people or write e-mail or set up my digitizing and sorting. I chose this life, and I chose to focus this way - I am profoundly aware of both my limited time left in the world, and the tasks.

But since I do it 7 days a week, and I'm doing it up across the entire waking days, 100 hours have happened.Also, 100 hours has not happened - I'll take a whole day off to relax, sometimes in the middle of the week, or focus on walking (although I can do some work from my phone anyway). But I don't drive myself to exhaustion and this is all my choice. I love what I do and I do it at the Archive.

Anyway, I have pity for the cynical bloochecks who have never known anything but a grift built on a lie as their personalities, and maybe by the time they're 40, they'll find their proper place, like I did.
