Here's a dumb question, should I install stuff on Arch Linux through pacman or flatpak when both options are available?

@iro_miya flatpak will waste craptons of space, use more memory, be overall slower, and also breaks any integration with the host (cursor theme just stops being applied when the cursor is in a Flatpak window, GTK theme isn't applied, some font settings don't get properly applied etc)so yeah, just go with Arch repos, and maybe also look at the unofficial repos maintained by Trusted Users (they maintain a good chunk of the official repos but some also maintain their own unofficial repos for personal project or packages they can't put in the official repos for legal reasons like Chrome)

@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be Flatpak is nice when you don't wanna pull hundreds of libraries into your system install with something like Blender, and especially damn Electron (Flatpak is amazing for not polluting your system install with Electrons)

@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be You can also use Flatpak Bottles and you don't even need to enable multilib in Arch, because everything is nicely boxed

@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be Well then you probably don't need Wine/Bottles anyway :blobfoxfloofhappy: (maybe Steam though? I have that one via Flatpak as well)

i'd always go for the distro's native package manager (pacman) but flatpacks have some benefits but also can run into issues (esp. regarding permissions)

@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be pacman first and then you decide between flatpak or aur.Personally I go pacman > aur > flatpak.Pacman updates faster then flatpakAur reuses other (system) components (unlike flatpak)

@iro_miya pacmanwhat kind of question even is that, why would you ever use flatpak on archi understand using flatpak on a distro that forces you to but arch literally doesn't

@iro_miya nowadays one of the biggest selling point of arch is being one of the few distros with a functioning package managerinstalling arch and using flatpak is completely insane :insane-eagle:

@iro_miya@mk.absturztau.be If you're willing to change flatpak permissions, or if you need wine/multilib, choose flatpak. Otherwise pacman as long as your software is in the repo. Avoid AUR when possible(malware risk).
