I would love to hear #ActuallyAutistic experiences about meditating. I have had some problems for years and years and I'm starting to wonder if it's actually "my brain works like this"-thing and not "I'm the worst person ever at meditating"-thing.

@exme Meditation does not work for me!I tried to explain to a psychologist I was seeing why mindfulness doesn't work in my case, she became really angry and shouted at me,'Mindfulness works for EVERYONE!!'.Well it doesn't work for me!And it doesn't work for lots of other #ActuallyAutistic ppl I've talked to, so you're not alone! It's so upsetting when we're made to feel that it's something wrong with us.I find taking a walk amongst trees super calming...#SayNoToMindfulness 😄

Biggest difficulties I'm having are imagining feelings in metta-type meditation (loving kindness meditation, or meditating compassion). It's very difficult to imagine emotions. In the meditation you are supposed to bring to mind close friends and then neutral and difficult people and expand your loving kindness to all of them. I have tried this on/off for 10 years but I don't seem to get better at it at all.

@autisticbookclub she is an idiot! Meditation is but one of the ways to reach mindfulness. 99% of the times I never did. At one point I got a shortcut ( via Sam Harris) and I am now at the point where I get there almost instantly. I never meditate. I bet your walks amongst the trees get you closer to mindfulness than anything else. Maybe you’re there and just didn’t slap the name on it. Anyway, it’s the way to go.

@autisticbookclub @exme Shouted at you? Wow, that's one therapist who is over invested in her own world view!

@edgeoforever I'm curious what the Sam Harris shortcut was.

@amos they were actually short meditations, with specific themes: sounds, sensations, everything. Just trained my brain to jump into space so to speak. Once I succeeded, I was able to find my way back. Over and over. Short bursts to be sure, but they reset me when I need to.

@amos however, I was at my best doing those swimming. Forget requirements of positions, etc When you do something where your mind is in the present, that’s when it happens!
