Question for people who are pro #fediblock Meta. Do you want to block Tumblr and wordpress too because they’re also closed source and corporate? Or just Meta?

@matthieu_xyz probably I would block Meta, at least at the begining. I have no problem with Workpress or other commercial projects.Tumblr I don't see problematc.

@matthieu_xyz I'll block any instance that's too high maintenance, irrespective of size.

@matthieu_xyz There are too many layers to this issue to be able to answer with a poll. <1/?>Besides the not being free software part. I will not trust a company whose business model is surveillance capitalism to respect the privacy and not data mine users from non meta instances. And that would put it t odds with the privacy policy of other instances and the culture that most fediverse instances have of not data mining users.

@matthieu_xyz <2/?>Then there are historical reasons. Several folks remember what Facebook/Meta and Google did to xmpp/jabber. both took xmpp to build the initial facebook chat and gtalk function in gmail. Even contributed to xmpp XEP's. And it federated, facebook chats, and gtalk users could talk to xmpp users of other servers. But the moment that gtalk and facebook chat absorbed enough critical mass, by attracting enough users and gained enough size they closed federation.

@matthieu_xyz <3/?>So they showed interest in it and once they had what they wanted; a chat service with a ton of users they closed it. Crippling the xmpp ecosystem. Those are only two layers. - Past behavior - Business model

@matthieu_xyz <4/end>There are many more layers. But these two are enough for me to want any facebook fediverse instance, far far far away the instance I am on.

@matthieu_xyz But yeah, for when thinking about tumblr and wordpress, think about: - their business model- past practices
