A fediverse feature that'd be way better than pinned toots: go to my profile and find a sidebar with a hierarchical menu of plain ol' HTML pages that are stored on my home instance, this is where I put the actually Good Stuff.Easy Little Federated Websites, call it, ELFWS, think of Legolas surfing, easy to remember.Add a button on every toot that takes you to that user's web pages. Label it "Good Stuff" so we can acknowledge that most of what I post and boost is shite

Inspired by Bill Beaty's excellent website which proudly has a "Good Stuff" sectionhttp://amasci.com/Having a page labelled "Good Stuff" is Good Stuff:* acknowledges Sturgeon's Law* helps the visitor not waste their time* allows you to post more by acknowledging that not everything needs to be Good Stuff but even the not Good Stuff can be useful to someone* you can always edit and improve Stuff until it deserves a hole in Good Stuff

Current situation, your Good Stuff gets boosted and bounces around randomly on people's feeds for a while and then sinks backwards into the Social Media Memory Hole, where everything older than a week is no longer looked at by sensible people but only by LLM bots, spammers and creeps, no matter whether it's normal off-the-cuff banter or Good Useful StuffOrdering the whole internet new-to-old was a mistake

I blame camera phones for this. Scrolling through pictures in date order makes sense, that's fine, but most other stuff you're gonna want laid out likehome/-notes/--house/---upstairsplumbing.txt---basementwiringjob.txt--projects/---weirdpinballthing.txt-graphics/--raccoonmemetemplate.psd-code/--gameproject/---raccoonspritehandler.js-memes/--raccoons/---angry/---lol/---horny/---dread/But touchscreens are crap at that so it's ALL most-recent-first, and it's a mind plague tbh

Organizing all your digital stuff into folders is the natural way of things and helpful for you and others so you can more easily raccoon through your old stuff to find the good stuff. Most-recent-first-style mixing it all up in a bucket with the eggs on top is just conceding to novelty-focused constant-production-and-consumption capitalist propaganda

Me, a web designer in my 20's, explaining to a client what a "blog" is: It's like the What's New page, except the WHOLE SITE is the What's New page.Client: Huh. And this is fashionable right now?20's me: Yeah, everything's turning into blogs now.Me in my 40's, reaching back through time and whispering unheeded into my own ear: You fool. You monster. You are burning the greatest library humanity has ever known. Shame. Shame. Foooooooool20's me: Why do I feel bad all the time :(

Metaphor for folders-plus-stream: we live on the banks of a stream, all of us in wee houses made of rooms. I have a pinball room and a woodworking room and a text adventure writing room and an online community moderation room, and in those rooms are cupboards and drawers you can furtle around in if you're interested. The garden has a sign that tells you about the rooms of my house. The stream is fun and unpredictable, sometimes good stuff floats down it, sometimes someone pees in it

Having a garden and a house with rooms (or a warehouse/dumpster if you prefer raccoonlike metaphors) gives us a place to keep the things that we fish out of the stream; right now we can boost (kick it upstream a bit), bookmark (save it to another stream it'll float down more slowly), fave (shout a compliment at it as it floats off out of sight), or reply with a hashtag (put it in a labelled box and, again, float it away).Right now it all floats off downstream through time, we all float here

I think organizing stuff in folders or in a branching structure like a tree or spider's web is a very web 1.0 thing and ordering chronologically is very web 2.0, and 2 can be very exciting and fun but it's a pain in the butt trying to find good stuff older than a year. But it doesn't have to be either-or, we can do both and they can complement each other like spider's webs growing in trees on a riverbank, we can do both, they work really well together, for goodness' sake let's just do both

Is YOUR internet suffering from Preferential Recency Disorder? Find out now:Search for how to build an A-frame pub style picnic bench like the one pictured. This design predates us both and there's really nothing new to say about these tables, so recency should not a factor in deciding which article to serve at the top of search results. Instead, the *clearest* article should be returned. If your search results are full of lengthy pages less than a year old, your internet may be affected!
