@iro_miya I mean, they’re not the same thing. Free software isn’t necessarily open.

@puzzler@cutie.city they're synonyms! Free software is a term used by the FSF when open source is used by the OSISee https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.htmlMaybe I should have clarified for those unaware

@iro_miya @iro_miya I like libre, free means monetary, open source doesn't necessarily mean freedom.

@Ruusu @iro_miya I don't care as long as the source is freely available ¯\_(ツ)_/¯Copyleft licenses like the GPL are better though imo. Fuck corporations.

@dushman@asbestos.cafe @Ruusu@boks.moe well if you have that mindset, you might prefer "free software" no? https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/open-source-misses-the-point.html

@iro_miya @iro_miya The problem is that in the overwhelming amount of situations people use "free" when referring to software, it's referring exclusively to the price. "A free man" works because prices are not (currently) put on men, and so the only way to interpret it is as freedom.

@iro_miya @puzzler not quite synonymous, as open source is not necessarily free. you can have an open code base with a highly restrictive license!

@epixoip@infosec.exchange @puzzler@cutie.city open source as defined by the OSI is equivalent to free software. When ElasticSearch became open but proprietary for instance, they changed all references to "free & open source" to "free & open" on their website. Still, while Elastic played fair, there could be people abusing the meaning of "open source"

@gingerjet That is the most foolish quote I've ever read.Free means unrestricted or without or other versions of freedom - it has nothing to do with price.Theoretically, if there existed something that was only restricted by price (and nothing else), then not having a price would make such free - but I'm not aware of any feasible situations where this is the case.Of course corporations love using bait and switch tactics where they offer freedom and then provide something proprietary - but of course most people don't even realise what has happened - a lot are even proud of being conned!Free software is free, whether you pay or it's gratis. Your time has no value if you use it to be enslaved by proprietary software.
