plants don't really offer any instant feedback, do they. they just sit there and if you do something wrong, you won't know for a while.

@thor depends on how wrong and how mature the plant is (species also plays a role). Pour boiling water on a seedling the result is pretty quick.Although they also emit sounds when damaged although it's outside of our hearing frequency range.

@thatguyoverthere Kickstarter idea: a little sensor with a speaker that lets you hear the plants speaki know it's been monitored in a lab, but this would be a product.

@thor I used to love throwing something (baseballs work well) up into the air at dusk and watching the bats check it out. I dont see as many bats around here as I used to. When I was a kid there would always be one or two sleeping in a window or something.

@thatguyoverthere well, if the plant is making sound, something must be vibrating.when you want to amplify an acoustic guitar on a stage, you can't use a microphone. the hollow body of the guitar will create feedback almost immediately.so what you do is stick a piezoelectric sensor to it that picks up the vibrations of the body and turns it into an electrical signal.maybe you could attach such a sensor to a plant.

@thatguyoverthere yes. but less so than wind blowing directly into the diaphragm. it would have to be tested. and there are means of reducing noise. you can talk fairly quietly into a smartphone in loud traffic and still be heard clearly. people shout into phones out of old habit, to be heard over the noise, but it's actually not necessary anymore.

@thatguyoverthere you'd have to check the frequency range. but i think it should be fairly high. clock crystals in computers and radios depend on the piezoelectric effect and those operate in the RF range.

It must be sort of like how a normal person views operating systems and other fascinating stuff. Then again, if one grows up a literature geek... such fascinations are entirely normal. There might be a middle ground, which is learning the basics, and seeing that plants have a lot to tell us.They are after all more complex than operating systems.

@thor Observations on commercial plants -- keeping in mind that I have no idea where you got yours, or much about Norwegian shops other than Helvete -- generally:1. They use water-retention agents added to the soil; in wet climates, this leads to root rot.2. They are usually overgrown for the pot they are sold in by the time you can buy them.3. They have been grown quickly under controlled conditions and so are prone to shock.

I tend to use gentle ones in multiple applications over MiracleGro type blitz infusions. The type of fertilizer varies somewhat with plant.

@amerika i used to have a paralysing fear of black-and-yellow flying buzzing things. bees, wasps, etc.i'm no longer paralysed, but i'm not going to have an enjoyable evening if one of them is buzzing around in the ceiling of my apartment. it will have to be dealt with.my former roommate was a bit better at that than i am. he'd trap bothersome bugs in a glass with a sheet of paper and let them out.i don't have the nerves for that, so i'm forced to kill them.i don't like it very much though. first time i killed a wasp, i almost threw up.i think maybe the plants are better. and also ecosystem reasons.

@thor @errante Farm kids were restrained because when you are fifty miles from anywhere, you must be very polite to people who carry shotguns and handle rattlesnakes daily. They'll kill you by leaving a snake in your bedroll. Not that a rattlesnake bite will usually kill you, but a rattlesnake bite plus no one answering your cries for help might.

@errante @thor "Might is Right," or at least, might is decisive. It is sort of the only way to deal with bullies. Raise the pain level and they no longer see you as an easy target. One of the reasons that this town is so gentle is that people tend to be armed. You want to go pick on some guy? Well, he might blow your head off, and the cops will come out and report it as "vandalism."

They are just prone to get obsessed by things as a method of understanding them in order to have power over them so that they can be creative with them, in my view.We like being liked and we really dig being recognized for the cool stuff we can do, not so much for the "we" but for the "cool."

@thor They all tend to buy from similar suppliers, so it is probably not an issue. When I bring home a new plant, I repot it in some "organic" potting soil which means peat and cow manure added to regular ol' dirt. If the plant likes sandy soil, there is a mix for that as well. Then I squeeze the sides of the plastic pot a few times to make the plant slide out easily, and take it out, then massage the roots and snip off any overgrowth. Then it goes into a new pot with more dirt.

@thor So, here our biggest problem is too much sun. It is easy to kill plants that way. I like this plant because it is effortlessly verdant: leave a seed lying around, come back to a full plant two weeks later. This means I have to look up the plant to see how much sun it likes.

That a tiny seed can make a huge tree in a few short years is... mind-blowing.How plants react and thrive and work together across species lines is really interesting to me too. It's just awe-inspiring, especially in a place which goes from hum-drum to everything green in a few short weeks.

@amerika i lived for 6 months in Manila in a condo there.i made the mistake of opening a window to let in some air. old habit. in a tropical climate, the freshest air is from the air conditioner. outside, it's just heavy humid air and pollution.after ONE cockroach got in there, they just kept coming back. even after a janitor showed up and sprayed down the apartment.it didn't take me long to develop an almost reflexive reaction to cockroaches, in which the sight of one immediately lead to a foot coming down.

@amerika the sun is never straight above you in Norway. so it's always passing through a bit of atmosphere.compared to living in an equatorial climate, it's almost as if the sun is always setting or rising.also, daylight further south works almost like a light switch. one moment, it's on. the next, it's off.further north, it's more gradual than that.

@thor That sounds almost perfect. Always somewhere in its arc, never quite stationary. The closer one gets to the equator, the more sun exposure seems to be a thing... and the longer the sun just hangs there, baking everything. This is great for plants if they have enough water, less so for pasty and pale humans. I'm also not against looking for new sources of protein, but I still think that the whole problem is way overblown. The whole renting instead of owning does work when it really allows people to save, but it shouldn't be imposed on everyone — and it feels especially hypocritical when people who tell us that are brought in to their regular COP by dozens of private jets 🤷@thor

@m0xee @thor the beef thing is weird, because on the one hand, I agree that the way we farm beef is generally unsustainable, but it's really a much more local problem that could be solved by spreading out the farms. Instead of having a handful of massive feed lots a bunch of small farms that primarily feed grasses to the cows (which they can graze on their own) is much more sustainable, and the quality of meat is higher which results in better health for the people eating it. Instead somehow the solution is stop farming meat and start farming crickets and algae.

@amerika @Coyote @thor I’ve been doing electrical work for 10 years and learned on the job. My job title is electrician now, but I just never got my journeyman’s license. The only reason to get that would be if you wanted a job as a supervisor, maintenance position, or start your own company. Some places will pay the same whether you have a journeyman’s license or not, like where I work now, they base it on what you can actually do, not what the piece of paper says you can. A few years ago I worked for a different company and one lead man on one job site had his journeyman’s license and only 3 years of experience, he got the position just because he had a journeyman’s license but I had to show him how to wire motors, a three way switch, and everything on the fire alarm, he had no clue, the only way I could see how he got the job as a lead man is because he was a good bullshitter.

@Vedrfolnir @Coyote @thor The use of tests and credentials is dangerous.Get good at what is on the test, and you can go farther than someone who knows what he is doing.

@amerika @thor In the area I live, most people have a vegetable garden, it’s usually the men tilling the soil and planting, you don’t normally see a woman doing the tilling, and then both men and women tend to it, women do most of the tending to it because they stay at home, the men don’t have as much time because of their work. I used to have a big garden but now just plant what I can manage while still working a full time job.

@amerika @Coyote @thor Yea. The guy I was talking about would never make it in the company I work for now, there’s no way he could have bullshit his way into a lead position with more pay. the other company had about 600 employees and there was a lot of so called “journeymen” like him, the HR manager wasn’t even an electrician and you had to pass a few basic tests online to get hired, the ones with a journeyman’s license could bullshit their way into a lead position. The company I work for now is a small family owned business with only around 30 employees, the pay is better, they don’t have an HR manager, the owner is the one that hires, they did have a few simple tests online but during the interview the owner, who is a master electrician, asks some hard technical questions, what companies and job sites have you worked on, what have you done on those jobs, basically they wanted to know what exactly you can do in detail. I told them I don’t have my journeyman license, and I know I was asking for journeyman’s pay, but after I explained what I could do, I was actually surprised they gave me what I was asking for. Sure I could have got my journeyman’s license probably 5 or 6 years ago and bullshit like the rest of them, fake it until you make it, but I can’t stand a liar. It took me 10 years of on the job training and experience and 4 different companies to get where I’m at. Might have taken me longer than some people but at least I can say I didn’t lie to get where I’m at.

@Vedrfolnir @thor Nothing like getting home at 6:30 to have two hours of additional work in the garden.I suppose that if it defrayed food costs, and one could work fewer hours as a result, it might pay off.People distrust gardens however because nature is inconsistent. Some years have better yields than others.

@Vedrfolnir @Coyote @thor Also: if you get sane managers, they take a look at stuff like that. The guy that made his way into a position without the credentialing must know something, especially if he is not covered with electrical burn scars.

@amerika @Vedrfolnir @thor diversify and grow perennials that require far less maintenance.

@thatguyoverthere @thor @Vedrfolnir I plant local here, and those tend to be perennials since we do not really have seasons.

@amerika @thor @Vedrfolnir I prefer perennial planting. There is usually a little bit of effort getting them going but once they are established they are almost maintenance free except for occasionally pruning and feeding (especially local cultivars).

@thatguyoverthere @thor @Vedrfolnir Me too. Speaking of soil health, I tend to plant like a pot grower, namely digging out large areas of the clay and mixing it into with composed peat and cow manure. As the plant grows, its roots naturally break down the clay and mix up the soil.

@amerika @thor @Vedrfolnir some plants are especially good at breaking up hard soils (alfalfa). Others not so much. I follow a similar pattern although I don't import manure or compost as I have plenty here to go around. You can't use chicken shit the same way as cow manure, but once it has had a chance to compost/breakdown it's excellent fertilizer. I also add in charcoal/biochar, and if it's going into pots I'll add something to help keep it aerated (chick grit and/or oyster shell work).
