My elderly neighbour, who I thought was wonderful, and his wife, they both had health issues recently.Last week saw removal trucks and then yesterday a family member mowing garden. I asked how they were doing only to be told they both died within days of each other last month in hospital. And nobody told the neighbourhood.Quietly cremated. They literally vanished off the face of the earth.I am still not sure how to process it

@Cloudguy Similar experience in my neighborhood. A quiet single man in is 50s living just down the street from me passed away from a heart attack in the hospital. Only reason we found out, were because his siblings were cleaning out his house preparing to sell it.Even though I hardly knew him, I really struggled with it, because he kept some ducks that my daughter loved to visit when she was younger. It took several weeks before my awkwardness about it dissipated.

@Cloudguy The inevitability of death raises lots of things we dont like to talk about.Luckily, .( if that is the correct word ) I live in a small town where for many years they would say, "Kick one, they all limp". If anyone died, we all heard about it.The local undertaker has a SM page announcing departures.Things are changing with an influx of new housing and people moving into the area. The road I live on has a whatsapp group. News travels fast.

@Cloudguy I told my kids to make sure my old drinking pals were notified when I died. One in Vancouver another in West Virginia.Sadly Trevor in Canada died in January, I heard about it in April from his Daughter. My other mate, John from WV, died alone on the 10th of May.Both were over 70yrs oldEven though we only emailed or talked on the phone about the old days, Both were always there.Probably easier in small towns to know your neighbours and their family.

@Cloudguy Wonderful. Most people have no idea who he is. I like how he captures the utter isolation of people living normal lives, and characters frequently are revealed as having died without anyone noticing.
