Apparently a drive died. I thought the entire point of RAID was that a single disk failing would not cause a disaster, but apparently it can crash an HP 410i. Or the controller killed the disk and I will have to deal with this problem again. WHICHEVER.Those disks weren't even mounted (so no I/O), so I don't know how they could cause a problem. One cool thing, though, you page through the menu and it will activate the LEDs on the drives depending on which array you have highlighted. See the blue LEDs lit up? It changes to the other disks if I highlight the other array.A0E8CEE5-50B8-46F3-BB6B-02085F2F7378.jpeg47C178DC-4CB1-4695-9BDE-088FB32B256A.jpeg

@p Is turning that stuff and into JBODs and ZFSing the fuck out of it not a future option? I have a box at home with 8 disks in a RAIDZ2 configuration and it gives me enough storage, redundancy and more important time to have two disks die and replace them if they do.

@Moon @p I used to work at Sun Storage back when the software raid was a somewhat unorthodox, and not universally accepted idea. Out flagship product was a JBOD and out performance absolutely dominated all sorts of expensive hardware solutions from players like EMC. Those people were peeved. The would present all sorts of feel-good arguments about the safety and interoperability, and we say "well let's look at the numbers". That said, box RAID had its good parts. If the firmware was good enough, the internal design sound enough, and the host link puny enough, its degraded modes could be less severe than JBOD's, just for an example.

@p Gen8 and newer HPE servers will, sometimessome SSDs report their temperatures in a way the RAID controller doesn't like, and that makes the server turn the fans all the way up to jet engine mode. the HD max temperature in ILO will show >35C for no damn reason. but other SSDs work normally with no problems.
