How is AI detection going to work when we can’t even filter out spam 95% of the time?

@glennf I think we, as tech journalists, need to remind people that computers aren't "smart." Ever. They can operate quickly enough to appear smart-ish, but it's nothing more than a parlor trick. AI is just the most recent example of this. It's nothing more than Eliza on steroids. It is NOT thinking, and never will.

@leo Leo, were you just listening in on my interview a moment ago? :) Quite seriously, just said almost the exact same thing (except I used "Super-T9" instead of "parlor trick"). Interviewer asked "well, what AI making decisions?" After laughing, I said "AI mustn't make decisions because it can't be held responsible for its actions. No responsibility means no decision-making. You can fire a human, they may learn. A computer can only be shut off after the damage is done."@glennf

@leo @glennf I, for one, will be less dismissive of non-human intelligence. I get what you’re saying Leo, and you’re right today. I’m worried for any emergent sentience and would want to aford them the same rights we afford any other sentience. I’m _really_ aiming for that ‘last against the wall when the revolution comes’ spot.

@leo @glennf they certainly are “smart”, based on at least two commonly used conceptions of the word. They can correctly and quickly recall large amounts of data. They can also do advanced calculations quickly. A human who does either of those two things would be considered very smart.I think you’re trying to say something more along the lines of: computers are not sentient, or maybe some other version of “smart”.

@leo @glennf a few years back, an exec from a chip company that supplies processors in "AI" systems said about whether it was an existential threat to humanity, "what we're looking at is training these systems to be superhuman in performance and perception but it's not free thought. We have AI systems that are able to diagnose cancer with incredible accuracy because it's been trained on that 1 specific thing, at that task it becomes better than human but it can't function as a complete doctor"
