@lauren Very interesting.(Canceling the move probably makes sense even for reasons having nothing to do with DeSantis. Imagineering seems to draw heavily on the talent pool in LA/Hollywood, far more so than FL).

@lucas @lauren Ron was thinking Disney need Florida more than Florida needs Disney, so they'd cave.Ron was wrong.(This is EXACTLY the same mistake the Brexiters in the UK made vis-a-vis trade negotiations with the EU, and as with Brexit, Rabid Ron de-prioritizing the importance of being a business-friendly state is going to take years to play out, cratering Florida's economy in the process.)

@lauren @cstross There lies the unfortunate thing about idiots in power. He's going to hurt a whole bunch of people that don't deserve it.Disney is a cash machine, going to Disneyland is a thing millions of people do. They need to eat and sleep and travel in Florida to do it.If Disney decide to move the park somewhere else, Florida is going to feel it almost instantly, and it's going to ruin a lot of financial ecosystems in the state, which will hurt everyone except Disney.

@lucas @lauren I don't think Disney will move the parkātoo many sunk costs in real estate. But they may cancel expansion/development plans and move investment out of state. (Only problem is, the other states with a good climate for their kind of recreation are (a) California (Disney are already there) and (b) Republican-dominated hellholes. Maybe they could open a theme park in Cuba?)

@lauren It was a stupid, short-sighted idea in the first place even if DeSantis hadn't decided to also make it a dangerous one for the employees.Imagineering should be near the studios. Creative people all bounce off each other. Splitting them up across the country was a penny-wise and pound-foolish move.

@lauren @mattblaze Putting an office there more or less means they can't hire anyone trans or who has a trans member of their family, similar restriction on visiting vendors, and on top of that with the RTO push employees with a big tech spouse will be looking at sacrificing significant income when they get a local FL job. Seems like a lot of trouble with no payoff other than maybe better Cuban food.

@choong @lauren Absolutely. There are significant current and potential staff who just canāt safely live there, and plenty more who would be simply unwilling to do so. Thatās reason enough, but Iām just saying even without the political factors, the move made little sense. Imagineering draws heavily on the creative and craft talent native to the LA area film industry, which just isnāt in FL to nearly the same degree.

@lauren If you're referencing the first part of my statement, it was my attempt to preemptively prevent a disagreement from people who might think I'm some corporate shill. Unfortunately, by trying to prevent that from happening, I'm receiving negativity from another direction.Maybe I shouldn't have felt the need to use a preemptive statement like that, but I've been burned so many times by not doing that that it's become a habit. Sadly it only reduces conflict. It doesn't prevent it outright.
