Non-fiction books is an obsolete, irrelevant format. They exist simply because they were once invented in the world before the Internet. Anything worthwhile can be well packaged in the format of posts, longreads, and threads.#nonfiction #books

no. on the contrary, fiction is waste of time and paper. reading fiction consumes your life and does not contribute to your knowledge and/or skills. you waste your valuable time and get nothing in exchange.

I have fun writing open source. it's much more useful. there're thousands of more useful and more funny things I can pick from. finally, you can read some monography to understand a new scientific idea, or some important matter, or a new technology, learn a new skill from a guide or something else. this is much more interesting than senseless fudge of fiction.

@VGM @Schuhmacher You've made the assertion that they're obsolete, you prove to me that they are.The fun thing is, I just need one use case to disprove your assertion.Seems like an easy win for me.

@jens @Schuhmacher Reasonable) I just thought you have some ready takes already.Ok, what about this: online texts have cool features like hyperlinks, they may be directly connected to other resources, they can be updated much faster and easier, they are more compact, and they just much easier to read online. And books, on the contrary, don't have any comparable features.

@VGM @jens books have footnotes. Also a text is more than giving facts, it is about convincing a reader. Hyperlinks are interesting but they also take the reader away from the discourse he should follow. How many people look up footnotes? Why should you want to follow all these hyperlinks. Better reading? Certainly not. It is impossible to read 10.000 words on the net of one text in one sitting. Your reading on a screen is sloppy and slow. Just like your writing

duh! I read gross tech docs on a screen. can't say how many words that is but 600-800 pages of dense font is ok. no problem with reading text on a screen. I wouldn't like to have heavy paper variants of those.

@iron_bug @jens @VGM We have a different idea about what reading is. Try to read Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire on screen. I can hardly believe that there are technical documents of 400.000 words. We are talking about different kinds of information, and a different way of reading. ‘Scanning’ technical information is different from reading a historical essay where facts are mixed with opinions and a writer tries to convince you.

that's too dull, just killer dull. I would die in 10 minutes, if I tried, without regard to screen or paper variant :)
