One reason so much stuff seems to break is that, frankly, maintaining legacy code is not considered to be "sexy" in terms of tech career advancement.

@lauren maintaining legacy code is almost by definition not utilizing the latest technology.Developing skills in "yesterday's technology" is considered less personally valuable than "today's technology".COBOL and 1999 excepted of course...

@i_understand Yeah, apparently you can make *quite* a good living on COBOL even now! Unfortunately, this unemployed guy (a) remembers almost no COBOL and (b) legacy code isn't sexy enough to work on.
