An ongoing side benefit of ChatGPT for me is that I've become unwilling to accept small computer annoyances, especially the kind that *aren't* fixed by ChatGPT.For example, this morning, I finally figured out how to automatically fix an annoying problem in Apple Pages that I've been fixing manually for, like, 8 years. It will only save me ~5 minutes each week, but it will save me a lot of annoyance. Boom!

For every tedious thing I do manually, I now think, "A computer must be able to do this," which isn't how I thought before.

@grammargirl Automating tedious tasks is how I got into web development.

@grammargirl How did you do that? By typing a how-to question into ChatGPT? (I haven't used ChatGPT yet because, for silly reasons, I'm hesitant to create an account.)

@junecasagrande I actually just Googled it.The problem was that an extra paragraph break between every paragraph in Pages leaves what looks like one blank line between paragraphs in Pages, but when I paste it into our CMS, it looks like two lines—so I was manually deleting each extra line.I never knew how to do a find-and-replace on a hidden element like a paragraph break in Pages. But it was easy once I thought to search for it. (You use \n to represent a paragraph break.)

@grammargirl I'm the opposite ... For every tedious requirement in my business life I think, "This was easier before computers". I am surrounded by processes that were once simple manual tasks and are now laborious slogs through computer systems that don't talk to each other, require annoying work arounds, and dehumanize everything.

Since a couple of people have already misunderstood what I mean, my point isn't that I'm using ChatGPT to solve problems or search for answers. My point is that seeing so many stories about how ChatGPT has made things simpler for people has changed the way I think in general. For the thing this morning, I just did a Google search about the problem.

@grammargirl The tedium of many small editing tasks got me thinking like this years ago. If I can get a macro to do something basic, I take the time to figure out how. But there are other things I prefer to do myself so that my brain doesn't atrophy. I sometimes navigate without GPS, and I rarely use Siri, for example.

@grammargirl I think this is an amazing mental shift; I work in a field where almost everyone realizes that computers can solve tedious problems, and my wife works in a different one where many do not realize that. We've puzzled for years about how people can make this shift. Not sure that "read a bunch of chatgpt hype" is the right answer for everyone, but I'm glad it worked for you!

@markstoneman Thanks! I'll check out Keyboard Maestro.I also recently started creating many more text substitution strings using just the Keyboard menu, and it's been great.

@grammargirl It's one thing to automate repetitive tasks. Or TASKS that can be automated. It's another thing to let an AI think and create for you.

@grammargirl Thanks for posting! I haven't used ChatGPT yet, perhaps I should think about it differently.
