For me, what's interesting about federation and instance self-hosting is sort of a return to the original spirit/ideas of BBS networks in the late 80's and 90's, pre/early internet: a focus on building communities around shared interests, not monetization and scale. I had lots of accounts, different types of conversations across lots of BBSs. Love it.Can we add door games to the fediverse? ha

@aLPHA Scale was always a thing...Who had the best/most doorsWho had the best/most CDROMs online at the same time (with loads of d/l software)Who had the best fidonet gateways that didn't run once every 24 hours?Who had the most phone linesWho had the most gateways to what became the internet...and lots of people who ran BBS's ended up running ISPs as the tent grew from hardcore interested people into "big tent" connectivity.I still loved running a BBS, but i certainly didn't run it back then with the ambition to be small. I still wanted to be successful.
