I don’t know if you guys can see it or not but it’s a priest (I’m assuming priest by the collar) saying that yoga is not ok for Christians to do. Has anyone else ever heard this?Of all the things in the world that people do, is this really something to harp on? @DameAshley I regularly interact with some hardcore Catholic and Orthodox Christians; it's a popular belief among them that yoga opens up channels to demonic entities and/or other non-God extra-dimensional beings, which is a bad thing. They take the spiritual act of yoga as the modus operandi, not the physical wellbeing the exercises produce.

@kgibson I’m sure there are but he said the poses are worshipping a Hindu God. I’m literally just working out. I do Pilates and Yoga and many of the poses are very similar, they just have different names. I have a friend who says she has to pray to Jesus when she’s doing yoga. 🙄I think it’s ridiculous. And the part about not praying to inanimate objects, from a Catholic? Rosary beads and Virgin Mary statues but no crystals. Hypocrites much? Lol.

@DameAshley There is nothing wrong with the exercises, the problem people have is the idea of emptying the mind to gain some form of “enlightenment” that is somehow different from that gained by studying the word of God. Also some of the words used are troublesome. “Namaste” means “I bow to the God within you” which is at least concerning if not outright blasphemy. I might also caution you about using the “Well the God I pray to” logic, as there is only one The God.

@DameAshley All of that said, many christians do take things way too far in their criticism of other peoples activities and should probably chill out a bit. This is why the Lutheran’s (In particular) use the term Adiaphora to refer to those things not forbidden or mentioned in Gods word where the individual is expected to use their own spiritual discernment and understanding.

@DameAshley @black6_ I had also NEVER heard this - and I was born and raised Catholic.I found out about this weirdness a couple years ago from my M-I-L, who is a recent convert (ie: shes a CRAZY Catholic now 😄) She's up on all the current stuff since she's immersed in it.I do yoga specifically to loosen my SI joints & keep myself from seizing up (I'm 50). They are just stretches to me - I don't say namaste or bow or any of that BS. I just use the stretches that work for me and leave the rest

This is achieved through the practice of breathing exercises and relaxed poses to achieve the correct state of mind. @Jagahati Namaste seems to mean something slightly different depending on who you’re taking to. If you just look at the definition it says it means “I humbly bow to you”I take a “power yoga” class which really couldn’t be mistaken for anything other than an aerobic class so I don’t think I’m that worried. I only said that about a “different God” because I get annoyed by the stupid things this lady posts. Someone put her in my mom group and I can’t stand her. Just venting on here!😊

@DameAshley Lots to unpack here. Its origins are very much in spiritism/mysticism which directly contradict Christian teaching ("empty your mind" vs. "be filled with the Spirit", etc.). Others have translated "Namaste" as well.That being said, I don't think that the exercise is going to make you a mystic on the down-low. We all probably need to breathe slowly more and stretch more, and Christians definitely need to better balance being salt-and-light with talk of coming condemnation.

Secondly when Constantine made Catholicism the religion of the Roman Empire, he fused many of the pagan religion with Christianity to make it more palpable for the people. @DameAshley She probably has good intentions, but people are often dificult and even the best intended and reasonable person can come off as a total a-hole on the internet.God gave us the Law that forbids some things, but he also gave us a brain and renews in us a right spirit so that we can discern for ourselves what is best beyond the scope of that Law. Constantine was replacing 1000s of years of tradition with a religion that was less than 400 years old, I think there is an adjustment period allowed. @surrealestate @DameAshley It's a bit of a to-MAY-to/to-MAH-to distinction; allowing the Spirit to push out what doesn't belong there, while keeping what belongs, is good. Finding the answer within yourself - not so much.I've done yoga, and may again (I have Yoga X (P90X); I don't think I have 90 minutes in me at my current conditioning level!). I don't think it's wise for churches to host yoga, but going full-on "you're dooming yourself to hell" over an exercise is unhelpful overreach, IMO.

@black6_ The counter argument is that the body was made by God, and to claim that there are intrinsically evil things related to any kind of physical movement is to claim God's creation itself is evil.Same goes for breathing. If there's a way to breathe that is intrinsically evil, then God made the lungs to be intrinsically evil.I reject the "spirituality" of Yoga, but doing stretched to strengthen one's back is doing stretches to strengthen one's back.@DameAshley

@SpiceOfOurLife @DameAshley The way it was explained to me by a deliverance minister is that there is nothing wrong with the yoga exercises, per se. But that some of them have religious or quasi-religious symbolic meaning, and that is the danger for Catholics.I don't do yoga myself and never have so I never cared before.But I understand the minister's point. @DameAshley I can’t understand why Yoga is controversial. It has many benefits like, physical health, mental health, yoga pants, can be done almost anywhere and at anytime. What’s not to like?

@surrealestateOff the top of my head; the lighting of candles to indicate God's real presence and incense are both from liturgical forms of Temple Judaism (the form of worship instituted by God to Moses), the marking oneself in ashes goes back to the Old Testament (I suppose Daniel was a pagan?), Numbers 5:17 is the earliest mention of holy water (Moses is pagan now), and the advent wreath is Lutheran.@Cbrooklyn112 @DameAshley @kgibson

@DameAshley Yoga is from Eastern mysticism, so the idea of meditating on something other than God doesn't sit well with some. I think it goes a bit too far, unless the Yogi is actually having you meditate on other gods.
