In terms of art and graphics, are Mac Books worth the extra spondoolies for someone looking to go into that sort of industry or can you do pretty much the same on a decent gaming laptop if you own one of them already? They always seem eye wateringly expensive

@PennyLope Is there a reason why you are looking into an Apple laptop? Why not a regular 24” M1 iMac?

@PennyLope I ask this because I find laptops, because of the miniaturization, is always more expensive. Is it because kiddo needs to carry it from home to school?

@PennyLope Used to be Macs were way superior in handling colour, fonts and printing much much better than PCs. Now the difference has considerably shrunk. But a gaming PC, IMO, might not be best for colour reproduction, detailed work and accuracy: they are built more for graphic intensive action, 3D redrawing, number of geometry shapes redraws per second, etc.

@PennyLope MacOs isn't necessarily better than windows or even linux - personally use all three, for different things. It's a preference more than anything else. Most software nowadays runs on most platforms and if you have a decent gamin laptop already, why even bother with a mac if the software you'll use is going to be the same on either platform? If you want a macbook and can afford one easily, why the hell not? Otherwise, don't. The only time I'd advise an apple device, is when we're talking tablets. YMMV. Focus on software first.

@Chronic-Yonic I need a laptop for myself, just cheap and cheerful, but eldest is doing art and design and I was wondering if he'd be needing anything more professional and whether it was worth taking the financial hit now or later. He has a decent gaming laptop though, and uses Blender on that, so I'm inclined to hold off as long as possible. If for no other reason than teenagers are fickle and we could have a complete academic turn around between now and college.

@PennyLope macbooks are good (but get the pro) if you want to be able to get longterm maintenance on it and stuff, the problem is most modern laptops solder all the parts inside so replacing parts isn't an option

@ren @PennyLope That is very true. >it can also run all 3 Oses virtually (easier than windows)?< definitely my experience. But when ios dev and needing all 3 OS's, then a mac may very well not be worth it.

@PennyLope https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gjCOAw0W90True, kids can change ideas and spin on a dime. For design and art, what is important is the way the colours are rendered and if they show up accurately. You can always wait tho, see if the idea of going into design and art will stick. Instead of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator, I use Affinity Photo, Affinity Designer and they also make Affinity Publisher, they do almost all the work the Adobe apps do, at a fraction of the cost. For the differences in the way apps do certain work, you can train yourself to learn this. Affinity also has a great user forum where you can ask for advice and tips and tricks in how to achieve certain results.

@PennyLope @Chronic-Yonic At this point I'd hold off. The investment may very well be worth it later on. But a decent gaming laptop goes a long long way in my experience. Plus with the added bonus of being able to play games.

These distinctions are basically just bullshit. If it’s so plainly an emulator that you have to put it in the name that it isn’t an emulator to distinguish it from an emulator, it’s an emulator.
