@grammargirl I tend to look at it like login (noun) vs log in (verb) vs log-in (adjective).

@djwfyi @colorblindcowboy Fascinating! I guess Microsoft can get away with saying not to use it as a verb at all in the style guide because it's for their own documents (I presume). But out in the world, people do use it as a verb. News writers may have to include it in direct quotations, and fiction writers may want to use it in dialogue, for example.

@grammargirl I feel a preference for "spell-check" I think mostly because I like little dashes and things...but my phantom copy editor says spellcheck is best

@grammargirl @djwfyi hmmm. Good point. I actually would change my vote now and go with “spellcheck” as “spell check” could present a misreading.

@grammargirl It really irks me that all of the spelling assistants are so against compound words. I regularly get reminders to break them in 2 or hyphenate them. I rarely comply.

@grammargirl I voted "spell-check" because that's the way the verb form is spelled in the dictionary I use for work (Merriam-Webster for anything that's not in my medical dictionaries). But I'm with the rewriters; I think using it as a verb sounds kind of weird.

@grammargirl Neither of the choices in the poll gives the context of whether a tool or a human action is implied. So if it was something for an editor to do, I'd use "Check your spelling."In the case of a tool usage case, I'd jus,t say "Make sure your spell-checker is on."

@grammargirl As a compound verb it takes a hyphen, as a compound noun it would be without a space. “Who spell-checks the spellcheckers?” makes it easier to see which is which. “Who spell checks the spell checkers” could be read as “The ‘who’ spell checks [blocks] the spell ‘checkers’.”

@grammargirl I prefer typing "spellcheck" because it's easier, but I prefer reading "spell-check" because that's quickest for my brain to process.

@ccount Thanks! I did that search yesterday before posting the poll. It's not that helpful, but it is super interesting. After looking at the results for different spans of time, I think the peak was probably from lots of instruction manuals talking about the tech, and the drop off was because everyone knows and we don't need to talk about what it is as much anymore, but I'm not sure.

@grammargirlTricky but I went with spellcheck. The longer you look at it, the more rabbit holes you can see to get lost in but I'd say the word has by now found a place in our shared vocabulary and it can join the other composite nouns & verbs we write as one word (like proofread).
