“The crime of “jaywalking” was invented in Los Angeles, which passed an ordinance in 1925 to stop people from walking across streets where they might be hit by cars. It came from an older term, “jay driving,” which referred to drivers using the wrong side of the road. But the idea behind jaywalking was a radical one: that the street was not for people, but for vehicles, and that only crossing at marked stops at intersections ought to be legal. And somehow, people accepted it.”Carmageddon, D.K.

@eivind @arnfinnp A crime that is completely I known almost anywhere else in the world, BTW. Whenever I’m in the “the land of the free” I’m always astonished and intimidated by the omnipresence of authoritarian regulation.
