@aven @icedquinn @sevvie I think the better comparison is Iraq, where the war "ended" very quickly but then turned into a decade-long military occupation against terrorists (coming initially from the disbanded Iraqi army), and 'profitable' in the sense that Iranian and Chinese weapons went to one side and American weapons went to the other side.So, that's not a "profit" vs. "no profit" alternative, but a "profit in war" vs. a "profit in occupation" alternative. I could imagine the Russians looking at Iraq, and looking at zealots like Azov, and concluding that if they had a short victorious war then they'd have to fight these same guys for a decade anyway, thus concluding that a war would be better than an occupation. But, I think in light of western propaganda, that this war is producing too many lessons to the effect that US doctrine was wiser. For one thing, terrorists are taken a lot less seriously than a government at war when it comes to claims like "these collaborators that I killed were actually killed by the other side". And to the point, DU probably would not have been supplied if Russia had instantly won and then the CIA was left with helping with IED production.

the bulk material may be dense, but it is a pyrophoric metal. scratch it and it makes sparks. fire a round and it makes a lot more sparks, both flying through the air and on impact. and those sparks are indeed small enough to float downwind. uranium oxide -- a micron-sized speck of it in your lungs will give you cancer. might take ten years or more to develop but it's quite reliable. that said, I have no idea what happened to them in Ukraine. the stupidity of NATO knows no bounds, apparently

Also, I think it would probably be called the British Empire. On saying that, there were people in both countries advocating for an end to slavery, but to talk about that you'd have to admit that white people were being enslaved and that the logic from there should be that black people should be freed too as they were advocating for freedom for slaves.

@sim @icedquinn @sevvie @apropos @hakui Yeah frankly I wouldn't have known about that (my history education was good but I don't remember much of it because I thought it was boring at the time) but my dad bought the movie #AmazingGrace and I looked up the true story afterwards.But I guess in the #USA they're more likely to focus on #USA history than history of other nations so it *kinda* makes sense. Although the fact that the abolition movement began in earnest in #Britain, not the #USA, is a pretty big deal.

Not so much its founding, but there were a huge focus on the world wars and the civil rights movements, about slavery that happened. I can't recall if they told us that we were involved in ending the slave trade though. I found reading White Slaves of England by John C. Cobden to be an interesting read into what life was like in Britain in the 1800's I think. An American wrote about that. Although White Slavery in the Barbary States by Charles Sumner talks about the slavery towards white people that were captured and taken. If they couldn't be ransomed, they would be enslaved.
