What to you would be a fairly complete childhood education, without too many unnecessary subjects? For example:Math (Statistics, Geometry, Linear Algebra, Calculus)Finance (Investment, Accounting)Shop (Carpentry, Welding, Blacksmithing)Agriculture (Horticulture, Animal Husbandry)Rhetoric (Public Speaking, Debate, Academic Writing)Computers (Programming Languages, Server Administration, Linux)Fitness (Marksmanship, Weightlifting, Running)CartographyAstronomyMusicLots of reading

@parkerI would emphasize civics especially considering how many adults these days really have no idea how their government functions, or even what their own role is in the governmental system.

@parker change out Cartography for Sketching in general, you can cover drawing more projections, since a map is going to be far less useful than the general concept and technique behind itAstronomy feels a bit too esoteric to have it's own dedicated topic, not a bad thing to have them read about though

@natsock I'd thought about chem/bio, but decided against it, since since all the stuff I learned in high school went to waste, and everything I needed for university/careers I ended up picking up as needed. Whereas things like programming, statistics, etc., ended up being more universal.

@i I was thinking of cartography more in the sense that the orderly functioning of human society has always required mapmaking. As for astronomy, true it's a bit out there, but it's one of the pillars of classical education.

@parker For any country that aspires for any sort of democratic engagement they absolutely have a say in, and it’s pretty darn important that they know what they are talking about if they are to exercise that say.We live in a time when people ranging from politicians to TV hosts to social media influencers are vociferously making statements about government, but if the population doesn’t know how their government works then they are unprepared to either be one of those speakers or judge whether those speakers are telling them correct things. That’s not to mention giving people the knowledge they need to protect themselves, whether it’s knowing whether a parking fine is valid or knowing the limits on how they can be approached by police.#Civics is so important even practically in any governmental system that goes beyond just telling residents to shut up and let officials do whatever they want. Which is an option, but not one I would go for.

@volkris I cannot think of a single occasion where I ever have had, or ever will have, a meaningful say in the democratic process. I get to vote between a handful of people every four years, all of whom I don't like, but their success is more a result of demographics, rather than anyone's participation. I mean, I can understand how congress functions, the same way I can understand how Silicon Valley or Hollywood function, but my understanding alone doesn't make much difference to them. Whereas something like business or finance seems more worthwhile in terms of having an actual say in the direction of the country.

@parker History kind of ties in to all subjects. If you want to give a complete education you want to teach what we know and how we know it, but I think an overview of historical events to at least give context to all discoveries would be worth a dedicated class.

@parkerFirstly, let me emphasize that part of civics is knowing whether or not a police officer can legally detain you. I think that sort of thing is very practical knowledge. But anyway to your point, there’s more to democratic engagement than merely voting. There is the overall discourse, the overall perception of government, and just for example, a protest may have impact even if that impact is not direct and visible.I would even say that pretty often a protest might fail to have much impact specifically because the asks of the protesters are misguided, based on ignorance of how government actually functions.Anyway, there are just so many sides to this, so many ways that people interface with government outside of voting, and so many ways that civics education, or lack thereof, does impact people’s lives.

@volkris I can see value in understanding it, as far as avoiding it goes (e.g., golden visas, offshore banking, starting a corporation, legal means of tax avoidance). And I do see value in more local forms of involvement, volunteering, town council, etc. As for the rest, I personally would have the opportunity to opt out, rather than have a say.So as far as protesting or having a voice goes, I can either protest on the side of the powers-that-be (e.g., BLM), in which case it's all good since that's what they wanted in the first place, or in opposition to the powers-that-be (e.g., the Freedom Convoy), in which case I get my teeth smashed in and now the feds know who I am. So I don't have a great view of civic engagement, at least in its current state.

@parkerYeah but I’m trying to emphasize sort of the next level higher: without an understanding of civics for example it’s hard for a person to even know who the powers that be ARE.If some guy straps on a badge and makes a big show of suggesting what you should do if you don’t want something bad to happen, unless you have an understanding of civics, you can’t really know whether that guy even has a way of enforcing his “suggestions”, Even if we assume he’s utterly corrupt. Is this person part of the powers that be? Does the lady at the DMV with a loud enough actually have a force that might come break your teeth? Or are they just a minor paper pusher? Got to know the civics to know whether they can follow through on threats!

@volkris Well in the case of the Freedom Convoy or Jeremia Leussink (18 year old who was pulled out of his tractor and beaten up by the RCMP), it didn't really matter whether or not the cops were within their rights, they enforced their suggestions all the same. If a guy with a badge tells me to do something, I will do it, or he'll be the shit out of me. If a paper-pusher at the DMV tells me to do something, I will comply, or they'll make my life hell and "lose" my paperwork. I don't need to understand much more than that.Maybe things are better in the States or elsewhere, but if the Canadian government can arrest people for not wearing masks, or feeding the homeless during lockdowns, or enact martial law, freeze bank accounts, and fly in mercenaries over a peaceful, non-violent protest, then I'm going to assume their rights boil down to "they can do whatever they want".

Political pressure does affect things more than voting specifically. Just calling up or writing letters does leave an impression on them about what issues that constituents care about.I've had positive responses from elected representatives that surprised me. That is, I expected them to tell me to fuck off, based on their party affiliation and the issue in question. However they told me they'd watch out for the bill and probably vote against it. (I did have other reps respond predictably, for comparison.)Knowing how to participate in the system, knowing who to pressure and how to analyze the news regarding government activity is pretty important, I think.

@sajith In my head I was thinking of Raisz's "Principles of Cartography", which covers everything including surveying, calligraphy, land forms, political & land use maps, as well as my own background, which is largely chemical and geological mapping. So physical & human geography would fit in there. And true, business & trade would fit well. That could go under a general business/finance category.

@ai @Tiskaany Well the way I think about it, if my kids are at all like me, they'll just learn on their own. My dad made a point of giving me minimal input, since he trusted that I'd figure out what I wanted to do on my own. And I ended up doing things like leatherworking, or wheelwrighting, etc., on my own. However, there are modern skills I wish I had been pushed into more (finance, programming, etc.). So my list is some elements of classical education (rhetoric, math, music, astronomy), self-improvement, and what I think are more important modern skills to have (programming, electronics, how to build things, grow things, investment & finance). As far as other topics go (chemistry, biology, what have you), I'd add those if there was an interest.
