I've lost track of how many have told me Wayland forces perfect frames (screen tearing is being implemented right now), flameshot doesn't work (it does), screensharing in MS Teams doesn't work (use XWaylandVideoBridge) and a bunch of other problems that got fixed months ago.

Even better people mentioning problems with Wayland that also exist on X like not being able to do proper color work. X doesn't support HDR either, this is being fixed on major Wayland desktops

@BrodieOnLinux the biggest problem wayland has so far not been able to solve is me being too lazy to try shiny new thing when dusty old thing works (seemingly?) perfectly fine for me 😸

I'm not out here saying Wayland is perfect, and works for 100% of use cases right now, there are still some legitimate problems but can we at least focus on the problems that are real

@BrodieOnLinux Well, the stuff that I need work on X, but doesn't on wayland (at least the last 5 times I tried) and I don't care about visuals that much, I'm basically spending 90% of my time in terminals anyway :p

@BrodieOnLinux I wish I could have the same approach for node.js, but all I ever get is "JS IS BAD!!" (with no reason given) or pointing out the few cases of postinstall scripts used for malware spreading. There is quite literally a setting to disable these scripts here:https://docs.npmjs.com/cli/v9/using-npm/config#ignore-scriptspnpm even let's you disable it specifically for dependencies only. Node is no worse than Python at most things and security can be addressed as well. Yet somehow Node just gets shit on.

@BrodieOnLinux Keyboard support, every time I set my keyboard to something else, (I use a weird layout) it reverts back to the us layout which is not usable for me, I have found no replacement for x-banish either really, but the keyboard issue is the biggest thing, I just want a way to custom map my keyboard, so that I can write at a normal speed, but it doesn't seem like many wms support that yet. I also have ideological problems with Wayland making the life of WM programmers way harder.

@BrodieOnLinux I believe the real problem boils down to this:"It's bad design to have a working preset and a working fallback, while they are different things"As long as X is handled as fallback, it's considered as the more reliable solution and you cant argue against that.

@BrodieOnLinux actually I have had problems with screen sharing since electron 22 or so.The newest versions of Jitsi meet and Mattermost crash because they didn't fallback to X anymore.I'm not sure what's the problem. It looks like it's something between Wayland and pipewire.I hope they fix it in the next months. Beside of this I'm using Wayland most of the time fine.We can't always stick to the old only because we know it better than the new things.

@BrodieOnLinux MS Teams for Linux is deprecated, so it won't receive updates for Pipewire support. Using the browser (PWA) version is recommended according to Microsoft.https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-teams-blog/microsoft-teams-progressive-web-app-now-available-on-linux/ba-p/3669846

@BrodieOnLinux I briefly switched to Wayland about a year ago for fractional scaling, thinking I was going to be switching back soon. Well. It turned out that a couple of other issues I had on X11 just weren't a thing on Wayland. And over the course of a couple of following weeks I watched as more and more stuff gets fixed, the pace was incredible. Never looked back. Also, PipeWire is awesome. The way I see it, these two are paving the way forward

@BrodieOnLinux looking at those problems, I only experience the screensharing (I havent even tried to fix it yet so that’s on me) and flameshot not working, but that seems to be a hyprland only problem (https://github.com/flameshot-org/flameshot/issues/2978) and again, i was gaming at the time so i didnt want to bother and fix it. These people’s minds are like stable releases: just give them a few months (some years) to update their minds

@BrodieOnLinux we also have huge accessibility issues still, but that's slowly, ever so grindingly slowly, being addressed, we're all brainstorming a way to fix it while maintaining the wayland security standards. That, actually, is much harder than you think. We nerrowed it down to what happens if we have multiple assistive technologies running at once? we can't give the same socket to both, we can't just split it like that, can we? but it's kinda getting there, and I'm saying that while there's no code written yet, just brainstorming, irc chats and freedesktop wiki pages, only one so far, but still.

@BrodieOnLinux you have no idea how right you are. This is a combination of factors, really, we're trying to keep the boat from sinking, because if it does, disabled users like my self and probably others in various dev communities will be locked either in linux TUI only mode, will have to use locked down platforms like mac, or even worse, blood sucking feends, windows. The main factor is the origins of at-spi, implemented in corba. Look it up if you don't know what that is, actually, don't. Next, when oracle bought solaris, they fired the a11y team, so it remained frozen. Then, because law requires accessibility, application toolkits have to implement a standard for that, so on linux, they had to use that. Next, corba was discontinued, so at-spi had to be ported to dbus, but it was done in a hurry, so they basically reinvented the wheel a lot. Now, we dk how to change things, because we have so much technical debt, dk how we'll be able to pay it, best we can do is not make it worse.

@BrodieOnLinux What am I missing to make Flameshot work on my Plasma Wayland session? If it's a hacky workaround like what you showcased in that video that one time, then no, Flameshot doesn't work. If it worked, it wouldn't require the hacky workaround.

@BrodieOnLinux I’m on a laptop with nvidia hybrid graphics so Wayland was always a hit or miss; some issues kept cropping up. But ever since Fedora 36, Wayland has worked for me 99% of the time so I made the switch just over a year ago. I still go back to Xorg once in a blue moon to connect to Bluetooth devices, but other than that one weird quirk I’m all Wayland baby, uwu! Also if this comment ever makes it, Hi YouTube! 🥳
