       @stux HS2 here in the UK is going to be 140 miles (225 km) for phase 1, and currently estimated at £56bn (including the cost of the trains).I think they're trying very hard to drop even the cut-down version of phase 2.

       @stux ahhh right, that one. Hard to tell. Things get over the budget really easily. In lot of cases you pay way more when you wanted to get away with less.

       @stux it’s impossible to build almost anything in California, so I guess I shouldn’t have hoped for this to be any different. I am sure the seismic requirements for such a project will be very demanding, which is completely appropriate, but California also makes it easy for anyone who doesn’t like a construction project to complain and demand changes, which makes the planning process extremely slow and expensive.
