@FacelessWhore @ehhh FSE's operating costs are hard to estimate because the instance runs a little weird and isn't the only thing on the box where it runs, but around the time of the big Gab flood, I think it was costing something like $150/month for the VPSs. Operating costs nowadays are slightly lower because I racked up a box in the datacenter.> I'm sure more users = greater expense. Actually, not directly. Part of it is age: the more data your server keeps around, the bigger the strain on Postgres. Then there's media storage but that's just a matter of size, since it's files rather than tables (or in FSE's case, because we use venti for the storage, unique data). But with Postgres, more data means bigger indexes, etc. So the size of the data depends on how long the instance has existed, and the activity level of the people that anyone on your server is following, so that's related to the number of users but isn't direct. If a hundred people on your server are mostly lurking and following the same set of people, then that's not much more load than just one person following that set of people. Interactive users are not the major strain. You can comfortably run a single-user instance on a Pi or a bottom-tier VPS, as advertised. Almost all of the activity in FSE's database came from elsewhere: of the users that are not deactivated, 2,123 are local and 510,046 are remote.

@FacelessWhore @dcc @ehhh Depends on the ISP but they're supposed to allow this kind of thing. That was a big fight in the early 00's, ISPs tried "no servers" in the ToS, but try defining a "server". That is mostly moot nowadays: they're not optimized for it (upstream and downstream are asymmetrical for a lot of residential connections) but you'll usually be using less bandwidth than a Youtube streamer so it's not like they will care. A lot of people run fedi servers on residential net connections.

I wouldn't run Postgres on a non-RAID'd SSD until the new-ish ones that have much longer MTTF. SD cards don't have that kind of reliability built in, and probably won't (because the design constraints are "small" rather than "reliable").

@dcc @FacelessWhore @ehhh @lunarised The thing is that the failure mode for SSDs is "suddenly it stopped and never started again". Spinny disks, the motor starts failing, you get I/O errors, you can turn it off and give it a break and then get the data off it after it's cooled down some.
