@leo With Apple allegedly on the verge of announcing an AR (or AR/VR) headset, my specific denials of this happening are on the record! I said I thought it was plausible they would release a loaner version to developers, as they did with previous advanced Mac and mobile hardware, but that the version developers saw might not reflect the actual release. Developers might also get a Mac-anchored device for testing that isn’t mobile at all. Still skeptical Apple will ship a $3,000 waist-hung lump.

@glennf I’ll agree with you it’s a terrible idea. But that doesn’t mean Apple’s not going to do it. Shall we have a friendly wager?

@leo That's a healthy attitude. I am expecting that Apple will not introduce something ridiculous and expensive, no matter how good it looks (i.e., Google Glass, way ahead of its time but absurd). But I think the wager is: is Apple going to announce at WWDC or before 31 Dec 2023 that it will be putting the item on sale (whether in 2023 or beyond) and at a price. Like if they said, “We're experimenting and haven't set a price or release date," that seems like I win. No?

@glennf Hmmm. If Apple just talks about a mixed reality headset without putting it on sale it's kind of moot. In fact, I think that's the most likely thing for WWDC. I do think they'll offer it for sale this fall, though.

@leo @glennf University labs will buy them. We need the hardware and dev software to create use cases that can be tested. $3k is not too bad.

@leo They have sometimes released developer hardware +6 months ahead and with no time/$. Ok, so how about this:Glenn’s statement: Apple will neither provide a shipping date or price for an AR or AR/VR goggle for sale to the general public by 31 Dec 2023.Leo's rejoinder: Apple will announce a price and a delivery date in which the delivery date is stated for 31 Dec 2023 or earlier (even if they miss shipping) for such a headset.

@glennf @leo >Still skeptical Apple will ship a $3,000 waist-hung lump. What if they do an iPad and bring it in at $1,500?I’m thinking “All bets are off” then?

@tbw @leo The wasit-hung lump is my thing. Apple rarely ships inelegant products. Everything leaked makes it sounds ridiculous. So if all the rumors are wrong, the actual thing has to be legendary—and I think defies some of the laws of physics, hence my disbelief.

@glennf @tbw June 5 is going to be interesting. Is it fair to frame it as a struggle between the design team that really doesn't want to release the headset, and upper management that desperately wants a sequel to the iPhone?

@leo @glennf @tbw Maybe just being a former fanboy, but wouldn't a good sequel to an iPhone be a foldable? Apple seems to be being left behind in that market. Granted, it'd eat up iPad sales, so there's that too. Every 'expert' I've heard talk about an iPhone fold or whatever claims that Apple won't do it until the tech is there. Would they really do an AR/VR thing when the tech already isn't there?

@leo @glennf Yes for me, that would be the nightmare scenario. That we find that it’s just not good enough, and for Apple to have invested so much reputation in it.But then you think, maybe just maybe, at a certain resolution/ quality you get to a tipping point where, once you’re to the other side, everything is just magical. But for this to happen, things are got to be insanely good, for instance, the hand tracking has to work 100%, and is that likely? Also, the big one, what is it for?

@leo @tbw rarely is the key word! Never say never. iPod socks were hardly a bet-the-future product unless...oh, God, were they?

@leo @glennf @tbw I loved the Touch Bar and wish was on all Apple keyboards. But I’ll give you the hockey puck mouse, iPod socks, the black Apple TV remote, butterfly keyboard, and third gen iPod shuffle.
