@mattblaze There are alternatives. Maybe it’s time you investigated the myriad of other options other than Mastodon that exist on the Fediverse.

@gme kindly read my post again. I am well aware that you can do this. But it depends on the multitude of clients and users configuring it for them to see your photos in undamaged form.

@mattblaze You’re never going to find a solution anywhere on the Fediverse that pleases every user. Every user has their own wants, needs, and preferences.

@gme nobody, absolutely nobody, wants their photos altered. Do you? Do you know people who do? If not, why are you arguing about this?

@mattblaze Honestly, I don’t care as long as if you click on the cropped photo you’re shown the unaltered version.

@gme Well, I don’t want my work presented in altered form. The default behavior is disrespectful to artists.

@mattblaze With respect then, maybe Mastodon isn’t the most appropriate tool for you to use then to share your photos. I’m pretty sure Pixelfed doesn’t crop photos by default.

@gme no. Same problem. Because it’s part of the fediverse. Artist has no control or way to predict. And with respect, belittling my concerns is the opposite of respectful.

@mattblaze I apologize if you thought I was belittling your concern. I was attempting to offer you a potential solution.

I’m once again reminded of how deeply I despise the default behavior of this (and damn near every other) social media platform to crop photos to a pre-set aspect ratio in previews. (Some clients allow viewers to disable this, but that’s outside the control of the poster, who has no way to predict how their work will render)The reasonable behavior to conserve screen real estate in previews is to downsize. Cropping alters the image, often in ways that destroy its meaning.Grumble#photography

Yes, I know about the checkbox that disables this. But as I noted, that’s a client option for the READER, not the poster. Most people just have the default set, so as a photographer, I end up with no way to control how my work is presented.

@mattblaze I think in the spirit of the web it’s appropriate for users to be able to decide how the content they’re viewing is presented, but I can see the default being best set to leave images uncropped (within reason). This is probably always going to vary depending on client, though, and Mastodon has a ton of clients with varying behavior.

I’m reminded of Twitter’s attempt at “smart” cropping, which tried to center faces. Naturally, it didn’t recognize certain skin tones (one guess which!) as being faces.Just show the whole picture, please.

And naturally, the “Mastodon is perfect” squad is trying to set me straight. Whatever.

@mattblaze @gme I feel like this is another variant on failure of the data model to represent consent to appear in quoted (within another toot, or in news/publications). Data model should let you select that you don't want your images to appear cropped, and systems consuming that should refrain from cropping (either show full, shrink without cropping, or show indication that media isn't available without expanding).
