You know, I bet a whole bunch of "onboarding people to Mastodon is hard because of the choosing an instance thing" could be mitigated by letting instance users generate and share invite codes to the instance they're using, *which are effectively just links to that instance's signup page*, but see how they'd already feel different?

@danhon I like it but am not sure it addresses the problem. A) Some people have an instance and are looking for people to invite.B) Other people just want to join mastodon but don't know which instance to join. How does group A find members of group B to invite?

I mean, *why not directly invite your friends to the server you're already on* I mean what's so hard here

@shacker @danhon Quite. If A knows B, they can just send a link. There is a touch of technosolutionism in this thread. People will soon be suggesting a way for an app to search a new users contacts and find 'friends' already on Mastodon. 🤔

@tomstoneham @danhon LOL we've been down this road before and it didn't end well! It does seem like a good idea on the surface, but those friends don't appreciate having their contact data handed over to some entity they've never heard of before.

@shacker @danhon Exactly. If X shares their Contacts without permission of those people, they are violating their privacy. We have been programmed to think of 'our' Contacts as 'our' data by the permission structure on phones, but it is other people's data too.#PrivacyIsSocialGood habit is to add as few people as possible to your Contacts

@tomstoneham @danhon Well we need our Contacts to be the complete phone book of our lives. Good habit is to never allow a service to scan our contacts, and good habit is for a service to never ask to scan your contacts!

@shacker @danhon Isn't that buying into the belief system they want? Contacts as total record is *convenient* but it isn't necessary and may be selfish, or at least embodying individualist values.By calling or messaging some person or organization, I don't give them permission to keep a permanent record of my name and number. We give up #DigitalRights without a moment's thought when we drink the Koolaid of convenience.

@tomstoneham @danhon It’s not buying into anything. People have always kept a personal address/phone book - it’s a necessity , not a convenience. I mean, you have to know how to contact the people you know! Giving that up because you’re worried you might slip and accidentally share it is like saying you don’t have a nice <something> because you’re worried it might get stolen. We don’t have to throw the baby out with the bath water.

@shacker @danhon I am going to need to think about this much harder, but I suspect the shift from paper to digital phonebooks is not innocent. My convenience becomes your risk in a digital world.Of course we need to know how to contact people who want us to contact them. My point was about how we store than information, how long we keep it, and who owns it.
