What is your "too expensive" pricepoint for a PC Gaming Handheld device? (all in USD, please do the conversion in your currency) - in case none of this is too expensive for you, just comment instead of picking a number#pcgaming #handheld #pricing

@boilingsteam I bought the $700 Steam Deck, so I would say my "too expensive" price point is just above that, maybe $800.

@boilingsteam It depends if you can still use it as a normal computer. If it’s just a console, everything is too expensive πŸ™ƒ

@GlowingLantern if it's a PC, you can always use it as a computer, as long as you are willing to get a dock and other accessories to turn it into a computer πŸ˜‰

@boilingsteam I bought the most expensive Steam Desk, but I'd consider $600 my limit for anyone not Valve. I was ok with the extra $50 since I use Linux on all my systems and Valve have done amazing work / supported the community getting games to work on Linux.

@boilingsteam Depends on the specs. Imagine a Steam Deck with a M2 Pro SOC and 24gb RAM. I would pay 1400 for something like that.

@boilingsteam Anything higher than $400 USD and i'd rather spend the money upgrading my desktop.

@boilingsteam I'm dumb, so I paid almost $1,400 for mine.., It's called "Brazil Tax". Thanks to the shitty politics, everything electronic here costs twice as much as in the US... 😑

@boilingsteam Yup. 60% import tarif 😱 , 20% Manufactured Product Tax (yeah, really!) and about 18% sales tax (equivalent to the European VAT)#braziliantaxes #impostosbrasileiros

@boilingsteam There was a brief period between 1991 and IIRC 1996 that the tariff was about less than 30% with an exemption for the first $500 (reset every 6 months). Then a POS of a president called Fernando Henrique Cardoso bumped it to the current levels.

@nerdeiro so did that result in a thriving local computer manufacturing business in Brazil ? :awesome:

@nerdeiro so does that mean like quite a few people just cant buy computers in Brazil nowadays? Is there no push back to repel that kind of tariffs?

@boilingsteam Computers that are assembled (meaning, putting the motherboard on the chassis) on the duty-free zone in Manaus (capital of the state of Amazonas. Yes, in the MIDDLE OF THE AMAZON FOREST!!!) are exempt. But final assembly != than a thriving technology industry.

@nerdeiro so would it not be cheaper to buy a quick flight to the US and get a Steam Deck there and bring it back?

@boilingsteam It would save me about $200, but the visa costs about $160, that is assuming I don't get stopped by the customs when coming back and forced to pay the tariffs. It would only be worth the risk for more expensive stuff, like a fully decked MacBook.
