If you could upload your mind/ your consciousness/ your memories into an artificial vessel (cloud, VR, android, whatever) would you? Why? Why not?

@gme Eventually we will have to. There may well come a day when we have destroyed the planet to the point that we can no longer survive here as biological entities.Luckily I am old enough to likely to be able to live my days in this body that I was born to.

@gme no matter what those who have already been uploaded may tell you, they can not be the same people as the dead they were derived from. new people? perhaps. indistinguishable in significant ways? perhaps. but it's a bit silly to think that making an android copy of yourself will transfer your consciousness into a machine.

@gme Last thing the world needs is a virtually immortal mediocre white guy. Besides: it wouldn’t be me, it would be a copy. Robert J Sawyer wrote a whole novel (Mindscan) about this. :) #WipeTheDrive

@gme By default, I would do that some time when I expect to die soon, unless the procedure was e.g. very painful, very expensive, or only provided by companies I couldn't support for ethical reasons.

@gme if I do have a spirit or consciousness that can exist without a body, why would I encumber it with *another* body?

@gme On a personal, selfish level: Yes, why I voted such. I'm not on very good terms with my body anyway (dysphoria + various painful physical issues), embodiment/"love the body you're in and be present in it" stuff really feels like empty platitudes to me, and it would be actually easier dealing with my mental health/interactions with others *if* I could select which parts of myself dealt with what when. On a societal level: also yes, even if qualified. While I know the dangers that are possibly present especially under capitalism, some of the worst harms capitalism, fascists, etc can do to us *involve* our physical, corporeal bodies or that of those connected to us and harm to them.To render threats of death and other physical harm meaningless would knock out a good half of the oppressor toolbox, at least until/if they found a way to induce equivalent suffering.

This kind of batshit posthumanism is not physically possible with technology in the next hundred years, at a minimum. Speculating about it is just mentally fucking vulnerable people up.You've got one body, take care of it while you can.

@gme Like, the downside is, the obvious: capitalism could force eternal work, could hold threats of deleting backups etc over people...but the other side of the coin, once you take Silicon Valley and their TESCREAL garbage out of it...can get VERY interesting in some good ways: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanist_politics#Anarcho-transhumanism and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumanist_politics#Democratic_transhumanism

@gme Consciousness separate from body is just a modern take on the eternal soul. Our consciousness is not separate from our bodies, it really is just there to act on our bodily needs and satisfy them. I do not think much anything will be left if the body is removed. Maybe a ChatGPT-like mindless imitation.Maybe I can think of this more clearly once I've had my morning coffee 🤔

If the current me was dying, and the new me could be embodied and sensorialy immersed, then yeah why not? I wouldn't hold out much hope of there being continuity of consciousness from current me to digital me, though.

Although I wouldn't hold out much hope of there being continuity of consciousness between current me and digital me. @mybarkingdogs @gme What kind of non-physical artificial vessels are you thinking of?A very popular current theory is water as a storage device. That can be spilt. Would that not result in harm to us?

@gme Depends. Because we want all this so we don't have to learn getting along with each other. We want to travel all across space but can't say nuclear bombs are bad. When faced with waning resources Western peopel start dreaming up new space colonies to drain. Also, much of what we consider to be in our brains really isn't. Emotions come from hormone glands all over our body and are tied intimately to our senses. Many of our more instinctive actions lay in the nervous system below the brain.

@GnomeBrunold @gme Assuming hypotheticals (which is all this is, for now), I wouldn’t be so utopian as to say there’s never going to be a way to do harm if the flesh body is no longer a thing - just that the most currently “accessible” options of direct lethal violence and deprivation of sustenance would be off the table at least temporarily

(I tend to hope that if it ever escapes hypotheticals, whatever means to exist essentially has “backups” so something destroying what form/interface one is currently using becomes pointless, which would IMO move sentient beings beyond violence to a degree because it would be unrewarding to those who would do it) @GnomeBrunold @gme

@GnomeBrunold @gme (and as silly as that sounds, there's actual precedent for it established in gaming of all things: if respawning in a game is difficult/impossible/extremely annoying - it encourages camping, attacking weak players that are just exploring, etc. If, on the other hand, it's relatively easy? *that* discourages the negative behavior more than bans, trashtalk, *anything* because it makes the player doing it take a direct consequence of wasting their time and looking like a fool for nothingWhich actually has applications outside gaming and the hypotheticals of post-current human body existence: any system that wants to end pointless cruelty and violence in any form needs to do it from the structure itself, because that actually works, whereas punishment and threat of it often doesn't, and nor does putting the burden on the victims to protect themselves)

@GnomeBrunold @gme (and unfortunately, almost all extant social systems do the exact opposite - encouraging, relying on, rewarding oppressive and violent behavior, making it the easiest of all courses - especially in something like the US where white people can do racist harm by inaction, presence, and compliance as much as they can by being an active slur-throwing trumpist etc)

@gme I would only really do it if it allowed me to load my consciousness into a spacecraft and explore the universe. According to scientists, that's currently the only feasible way to do it as intergalactic space travel takes a friggin long time. Then again, it would only be a copy of my consciousness and not actually me, so it probably wouldn't benefit me much.

@mybarkingdogs @gme Nature wanted to have a say in this, and I came down with a cold. What I think is a more likely and much smarter way is to enhance the human body. But we have a history of 2000 years of philosophers shitposting about the human body, while in fact personality and body aren't to separate easily.I want to stress that I understand your reasoning, though.
