Over 60 years of life, if you keep your smartphone for an average of two years, then you'll need 30 devices. If you keep your phone for five years, then you'll need 12 devices. The European Environmental Bureau has stated that extending the lifespan of smartphones and other electronics by just one year would save the EU as much carbon emissions as taking two million cars off the roads annually.https://gerrymcgovern.com/tips-for-more-sustainable-smartphone-use/

@gerrymcgovern The iPhone XS was the last model I bought as a new device and in fact I still use it, no intention to replace it anytime soon. Before that I was a "need a new model every year"-fanboy, I admit. For my family I buy only used iPhones since then and only when the old one broke. In terms of sustainability Apple iPhones are still my hero because of their long term support for OS upgrades.

@gerrymcgovern My Samsumg Galaxy J7 Prime was made in 2017 and I bought it used in 2019. It is still going strong at age 6. No reason to switch!

@CadeJohnson @gerrymcgovern well done - unfortunately it seems newer Samsung models don't last as long.My excellent S10 manufactured 4 years ago developed a problem holding charge. I wanted to get it repaired, but the person I spoke to said the battery was glued onto the back of the screen, meaning a new battery meant a new screen as well. Thus it's not worth doing πThe result was I got a new phone, as I didn't really have much other choice. So much for "progress".

@stillbreathingSamsung now rates highest on the ability to be repaired at home of any phone brand AFAIK (at least for certain models) with iFixit. If I lived in the EU I would tend towards the Fairphone, super repairable and upgradable. The Samsung X Cover Pro models also have clip in batteries. This is not an endorsement of Samsung :) @CadeJohnson @gerrymcgovern

@largess Not sure about the repairability of Samsungs.https://ifixit.com/smartphone-repairability?sort=scoreThe most repairable of the newer Samsungs is the Galaxy A51 from 2020 with a score of 4/10, newer models just score 3. Judging by that table alone I get the impression that recent Samsungs are not really repairable. Not that most other brands are better; with the exception of Fairphone (as you said), Apple, Google or Shiftphones. Nokia G22 unfortunately is missing.@stillbreathing @CadeJohnson @gerrymcgovern

@BrackmeisterThe Samsung XCover 6Pro has an on the fly user replaceable battery for example. But you're right and it's really a comparitve thing, is the terrible to repair phone X slightly better then the terrible to repair phone YAside from standouts like the Fairphone and Samsung Xcover most of the mainstream phones are within points of each and are all terrible.@stillbreathing @CadeJohnson @gerrymcgovern

@largess @Brackmeister @stillbreathing @CadeJohnson Agreed. We need phones that last 10 years and laptops that last 20 years. We need to keep agitating for this.

@louis @gerrymcgovern Would agree that Apple is the most ethical "mainstream" option, but it doesn't mean much, as this article demonstrates (5 minute read): https://pluralistic.net/2021/05/18/unhealthy-balance-sheet/#think-manorialismJust felt the need to point out that Apple can in no way be compared to say, Fairphone.

@tastyraspberry Fairphone? You mean the company that produces in China, pays only minimum wage (while Apple pays twice the minimum wage) and ends support 2.5 years after the release of a model? πβI don't know if that is still true but I agree, conceptually, Fairphone could have been a good thing.

@louis Fairphone has published documents that state their commitment to a "living wage" as opposed to using the federal "minimum wage" (which is often too little) as a reference point. I read their whitepaper on the topic. https://www.fairphone.com/en/2020/12/18/living-wage/Not that I don't want to believe you, but could you please provide sources for:- Apple's policy for paying double the mininum wage to its factory workersFairphone is ending support for the Fairphone 2 from 2016 this year: https://piped.video/watch?v=pm_FRtAYU2k)
