When a company says something like: "the data is uploaded to the cloud" they just mean it's going to their serversThere is no 'cloud', it's just someone ele's server or PCI guess it sounds more magical and less privacy intrusive but it's all the same... Don't fall for that bs

@stux Really when a company says "the cloud" they don't mean their servers, they mean Amazon or Google's servers.The Cloud is indeed someone else's PC, that someone else usually isn't even the company you contract with.

I've come to believe that this remark usually mean its not going to their servers, its going to some 3rd-party servers that were contracted some time ago, by someone who left the firm, and nobody is quite sure where the data is.@stux

@stux ‘Cloud’ is worse than that. At least if it’s uploaded to *their* server they know where it is. ‘Cloud’ means we have outsourced this and your data could be almost anywhere and we don’t care.

@stux My father was a telecom engineer. When he designed central offices, he would use "the cloud" to show data ingress and egress that was outside his area of responsibility. When I asked him what the cloud was on his diagrams, he said, "the cloud is what engineers use to show where it becomes somebody else's problem". It made us both laugh when the suits picked it up as a marketing term.

@stux This has certainly always been true, but definitely not always a bad thing. One of the binds Twitter is in now is the fact that most of their infrastructure is on-prem. They have a massive data center footprint with no easy way to migrate or offload it, so any outages are 99.99% their responsibility. Or more specifically the responsibility of their overworked, stretched thin, cut-to-the-bone support staff.
