I keep hearing talks of people wanting to defederate mastodon social, are we in the beginning stages of the fediverse imploding. Grab your popcorn, sit back and relax

@BrodieOnLinux either start you own fedi (better for the network) or join some one elses. Were on the fedi not twitter

@Semmelstulle From what I'm seeing people say, because it's the default instance it's full of spam accounts, bots, etc and actively harms the fediverse. But being the default instance it's also where most of the people who left Twitter went so it would basically kill off all those users

@BrodieOnLinux The opposite, it's healing. Fedi works optimally when it's not dominated by huge general-purpose instances.

@BrodieOnLinux i didnt say they aren't allowed to use fedi, big instances are a canncer to the network. This is not twitter we have many (and i mean many) other instance's (fedi has 10 million people atm)

@Tathar That's what would optimally happen but that's not how people have been taught social media works over all these years so people gravitate towards the major instance because it's just easier. I don't know if it's a good idea to just boot all those people who decided to try out the fediverse plus the people who've been using it for years out.

@BrodieOnLinux I've personally blocked it for years, and many of the newer servers I'm connected to have gotten their start by immediately putting it on their Silence lists. The idea that it's not worth dealing with isn't new, it's just not evenly distributed.

@BrodieOnLinux i think people are overreacting a bit about mastodon social but on the other hand, it's our right as fediverse users to federate or defederate with the instances we please

@dcc It has 10 million accounts, that's not exactly the same as 10 million people. The monthly active users is around 1.5 million. But the issue with is people tend to gravitate towards big instances because it's just easier, people are accustomed to a social media site being the one thing. I don't think it's healthy to cut off a big instance every time it gets too big.

@mariskus Without a doubt, go ahead and defederate whatever you want to, but what is done on a small instance has a very different impact to what is done on a big instance or what is done on a ton of small instances.

@BrodieOnLinux read it wrong lol, anyways a server with 1.5 million is 100% not good for the fedi

@BrodieOnLinux I think it is as easy to defederate than to refederate, so might just be a temporary wave.

@BrodieOnLinux Ehhhh... no offense intended by this, but I would say it's a bit dramatic to state that the whole fediverse is "imploding" just because one instance of a decentralized network went to shit. I mean, isn't the whole point of being decentralized to keep a fediverse safe from this exact sort of issue? For instance, I remember when mastodon social got DDoSed and it was like "Oh that's terrible, glad I don't have to deal with that."If they really hate twitter, they'll move instances.

@BrodieOnLinux I get it: I started on m.soc before I used that account to ask for an invite to a much smaller instance that fit my niche. Now I'm on two more instances for other purposes too. Two of my three instances have m.soc limited now because its massive size and lack of a tailored niche makes full federation unsustainable. But so long as people can migrate away from massive instances once they've outgrown their newbie stage, it isn't really a problem.

@BrodieOnLinuxwhat the heck is this discussion all about? If an instamce decides to defederate mastodon.social than they do so. You can always switch another instance or host your own. There are sur plenty of other instances that won't defederate it.

@dcc Mastodon.social has 226k active users, the fediverse has 1.5 million monthly active users, there's close to 10 million accounts on the entire fediverse
