A very spiritual greeting from the kebab shop I'm getting dinner at.

@strypey lmao, I've been wondering this week what "namaste" means. Hit upon some yoga for kids that, if not for the cultural appropriation is really well done. "Namaste" is referred to as "our secret yoga codeword", and changed depending on the story theme (namasaurus for the dinosaur one).

@BrilleBhreallaI know it can be impolitic to say so these days, but cultural appropriation is not inherently a bad thing. It's natural, normal, and positive for cultures to learn from each other when they come into contact. It only becomes a bad thing when it's done disrespectfully, extractively, or in ways that reduce the origin culture's ability to practice or use the thing appropriated. Such as patenting a plant medicine after learning about it from an indigenous people.

@strypey yeah, I'm on the border with this one. I suspect i would have been happier if I'd found the channel pre-lockdown before it seemed to get super commercialised. I know we live in a society, but the combo of trivialising "namaste" without seemingly referencing the origins (which are a bit sacred), and making what must be a tidy profit at the same time makes me uncomfortable. Coming from a Pom too. Feels a bit disrespectful and extractive, but we do still participate tbh.
