@brunomiguel with premium? I'm so used to alternative apps with ad-blockers and tunneling that I don't think I'll need premium or to use Google's apps. Of they ever lock 1080p+ behind a paywall it'll be the day I'll stop using YouTube.

@jt_rebelo I still use the youtube website on the desktop (paired with ublock origin and adguardhome to block ads and trackers) ; on mobile, I try to use third-party clients or firefox + ublock origin.I see them losing a lot of traffic if they put fullhd behind a paywall. 4k will likely go that way, though :(

@brunomiguel does that option appear with you logged in?As for 4k going away, I'll suffer with it, but it won't stop me from watching videos on Xbox or my Smart TV (on alternate apps). On a mobile phone, even if I have a screen for it, I won't regularly use 4k, just 1440p, and could go with 1080p. On PC I'm still sporting FHD screens.I'll use tunneling and adblockers on everything (I'll delete my whitelist) the second FHD+ options disappear.

@jt_rebelo I was logged in, but I didn't test it logged out. I've looked at other videos for it, but it only showed up on a video on @BrodieOnLinux channel

@brunomiguel @jt_rebelo For the record I didn't have to enable anything on my end or do any special rendering so YouTube is doing some magic on their end

@BrodieOnLinux I bet they are using your 4k upload and then transcoding to 1080p with an higher bitrate than usual (like 1440p), calling it "Premium". YouTube content creators deserve the ad revenue but most already have ads inside videos, so why is Google sticking ads and more ads before and even twice/thrice in the middle of videos? Are they giving more money to content creators, or just trying to get more money out of people's pocket with premium? It is the 2nd option, I bet. @brunomiguel
