@stanford then you have hetzner/1&1/(...) broken ipv6 that fails when MTU < 1500

@sxpert Ouh, noting that I've experienced so far.Well, not more than the usual broken path mtu discovery that we have for decades also with IPv4.If you do tunnelling or anything that causes a lower mtu, you are mostly required to do proper mss clamping.

@stanford oh, that's the issue.. ipv4 works... ipv6 to the same site times out...constantly have to add domains to my firefox's "force IPv4" list

@sxpert Yea, depending on the network and the actual setup, it can happen that IPv4 works and IPv6 doesn't because the IPv6 package is usually a bit bigger because well.. IPv6 addresses are longer ^^Or IPv4 traffic is handled entirely differently in the first place because NAT is used or something like that.So It can happen that the IPv6 package exceeds the MTU somewhere in the path but not the IPv4.But this should be fixable with mss clamping.

@stanford @sxpert in most deployments ipv4 only works because of like 40 years of fairy dust and prayers to cisco is keeping it working still.

@sxpert @stanford ipv6 has a minimum mtu because it does not fragment, thank fuck for that because FUCK ip fragmentation

@jeff @stanford have no problems with youtube, so I suspect the issue is at the other end...

@sxpert @jeff Well, assuming that multiple big providers have a broken network setup for years might be wrong xDEspecially as Hetzner too a leading role regarding IPv6.They have more experience in IPv6 setups than most German ISPs.I don't know the setup, so I can't make any suggestions on the real issue in your case. But I would assume that the issue is somewhere on your side, considering that millions of others don't need to disable IPv6 to access their services 🙈

@stanford @jeff funny it only seems to be this particular provider that is giving me issues. My suspicions is on some mis-configured firewall

@sxpert @stanford some stupid sites block icmp and prevent pmtu discovery, thats the real issue

@chuang Even when ICMP is enabled, pmtu is kind of fucked up :blobcatverysad:I never really looked into it further because there are so many reasons by now to just not rely on it, but also assume there is enough software out there which don't use it at all.And once your start with anycast and load balancing, the game is lost in general :blobcatverysad:
